J.P. Wiser's Legacy Canadian Whisky
Canadian — Ontario, Canada
Reviewed July 8, 2016 (edited October 18, 2016)Nose: oak, cereal, shoe polish, vanilla it's rye!! Palate: light mouthfeel. Spicey, clove just a hint of sweet, herbal almost amaro. Gingerbread. Finish: medium length, clean. A very solid example of classic Canadian whisky done properly. A solid value and something Wiser's is justifiably proud of. 89/100. -
Eagle Rare 10 Year Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed June 30, 2016 (edited November 22, 2017)My hands down favorite American Whiskey to date. Really complex for a bourbon I recommend this to scotch drinkers looking for a segway to bourbon. Sweet leather (is that a thing?) with slightly over ripe bananas and a mouthful of the perfect amount of oak. A medium length smooth finish with a hint of charred wood balanced with peppery spice. What an absolute bargain, I wouldn't change a thing. 94/100. -
Maker's Mark 46 French Oaked
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed June 27, 2016 (edited November 20, 2016)Deeper than regular MM in all the ways I want from a bourbon. More wood, more char, more spice and more warmth. Honey and alcohol fight (or maybe it's more of a dance) down your throat. I enjoyed it. Nose: Sweet vanilla and oak. Palate: more of the same with charred wood, not smoke. Anoticeable higher alcohol warmth. Finish: medium short length. 87/100. -
Weller Special Reserve Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed June 22, 2016 (edited October 4, 2016)A fantastic value to be sure. Nose: raisins, cherries, caramel. Palate: fairly one dimensional, oak. It's a let down after the promise of the wonderful aroma. Finish: long, smooth if boring. Can't wait to try the 12! 86/100. -
Glenmorangie The Original 10 Year
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed June 18, 2016 (edited September 29, 2017)The first Scotch Whisky I really liked. People consider this to be part of the big three with Glendfiddich 12 and The Glenlivet 12 but for me this is on another level. It's not spectacular by any means but it is a very solid scotch whiskey and has everything I look for in a non peated scotch albeit with the volume turned down. It also happens to be the base for some very very nice scotches like Lasanta, Quinta Ruban and the sublime Nectar D'Or. Great intro to the art. Lovely. 89/100. -
Balvenie Caribbean Cask 14 Year
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed June 17, 2016 (edited August 16, 2018)Nose: Floral, fresh linen, a hint of licorice. Very sweet for a Scotch Whisky. Palate: medium mouthfeel, fruity, plum, no smoke. A light earthiness. Really not a ton going on, sort of one dimensional but it does what it's meant to very very well. Similar to Glenmorangie Nectar D'or. This is delicious, but if you're looking for challenge grab something else. 92/100. $139.45 cad -
Aberfeldy 12 Year
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed June 17, 2016 (edited November 18, 2016)A solid example of a Highland. Light with good depth sweet without being cloyingly so. The faintest hint of smoke. Excellent excellent value and a thoroughly enjoyable everyday dram. 91/100. -
Johnnie Walker Gold Label Reserve
Blended — Scotland
Reviewed June 11, 2016 (edited October 1, 2017)A nice level of peat for my taste. Smooth but not a ton of depth. 3/5. -
Tyrconnell 10 Year Port Cask Finish
Single Malt — Ireland
Reviewed June 11, 2016 (edited March 1, 2017)I do prefer a Pot Still to this but appreciate that the Irish can make a decent Scotch?!?! Still though a lovely whiskey. We toasted to my old man the day we laid him to rest with this. There are a couple ounces left in the bottle that will remain there for him. He was a gentleman in the truest sense of the word. 89/100. $99.95 cad
