J.P. Wiser's Last Barrels
Canadian — Ontario, Canada
Reviewed October 28, 2016 (edited November 21, 2016)Truly astounding. One of most flat out enjoyable whiskies I have had. Certainly the best Canadian. In a different league than Wiser's Legacy or Lot 40. Much more of a bourbon, a light, balanced, incredibly smooth Canadian bourbon. 92/100. -
Glenmorangie Nectar D'or 12 Year
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed October 27, 2016 (edited April 24, 2018)Nose: super sweet, acetone, raspberry preserves, vanilla. Palate: Wow! Waves of sweet, good mouthfeel that coats your tongue, citrus, meringue, vanilla. Finish: long warm finish, floral. This is really wonderful stuff. Miles from an Islay or a Highland Park but it establishes it's own ground. 95/100. $123.15 cad -
Nose: toasted pumpkin seeds, dried oregano, rubber and wood smoke. Palate: A good but not great mouthfeel, moves to more roasted pumpkin seeds, rubber, smoke is there but not overwhelming. Medicinal. Finish: a long warm finish ending with raw rubber. A well balanced, complex Scotch whisky. 95/100. $85.95 cad

Green Spot Single Pot Still
Single Pot Still — Ireland
Reviewed August 19, 2016 (edited October 1, 2017)Tasting notes to follow in time. I enjoyed this, a wonderful freshness to it but a little young compared to the cheaper and more interesting Redbreast. $85.40 -
Highland Park 12 Year
Single Malt — Islands, Scotland
Reviewed July 21, 2016 (edited April 24, 2018)OK so I haven't had the much vaunted 18. I wanted to get my bearings on this unique Orcadian whisky distiller before I step on the ice with an 18 year old Wayne Gretzky. Having recently purchased David Broom's Atlas of Whiskey I was mostly excited to see the difference between the more typical Islay peat found in Laphroaig and countless others versus this Orkney exclusive Hobbister Moor peat. I can certainly see a difference. While I have enjoyed very much the Lagavulins and Taliskers I have had this stuff is definitely different. It is certainly sweeter and has lovely creamy mouthfeel with a medium to long finish. A warm but not hot experience. Smoke is, for me anyway, perfectly balanced and perhaps the Hobbister peat gives it the earthy taste of green vegetation that I find. This is the defining moment or characteristic here, that earthiness that's like the Brian May solo in a Queen tune; the defining moment and yet a perfectly assimilated part of the whole. It smoothes out the smoke a tiny bit and is an open door for a noob like me to stroll right through. Just wonderful, very solid value vs the Talisker 10 of comparable quality. I can only imagine what the 18 is like. I'm going to take my time with this bottle and besides what's the rush this scotch whisky is no stepping stone. 94/100. -
Nose: Sea air, vanilla, rubber, smoke, leather, iodine. A very sweet smell. Bare with me here. This smells like a breastfed baby. If you've smelled one you'll get it. Palate: Good mouthfeel, fiddle heads, sweet vanilla, very nice smoke, bubble gum. Finish: Medium length, pleasant, smoke lingers forever! The first smokey peated scotch that I flat-out enjoyed right from the get go. I prefer this over Lagavulin 16. Less smoke of course (but not my a country mile) but smoother, sweeter and creamier. Really lovely dram and a decent value even at its moderate price. My favorite whisky so far! 97/100. $99.95 cad
