Weller 12 Year Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed November 24, 2024 (edited November 26, 2024)Nose: strawberry, cherry, plum, orange - pretty rich fruit. Some chestnut wood / hazelnut depth there too. A bit of astringency. Flavor: Mostly a very deep muted carmel up front. Very blunted - no sharp notes at all. Almost disappointing until the carmel sweetness starts to really pop mid-pallet. The fruitiness shows up immediately after. Overall very good and approachable...which is why Weller captures such a wide audience. Finish is not very long and there is nothing super interesting here...just very enjoyable in its simplicity. T8ke: 7.6 -
New Riff 8 Year Kentucky Straight Rye
Rye — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed November 24, 2024 (edited November 27, 2024)Nose: I first noticed a sweeter grassy (pea / potato?) note, oat-like rye spice, lighter stone fruit with a lemon zest. Some peppery oak, and slight solvent astringency. Taste: Sweet pea and honey seems to dominate here for me up front...which is strange. Notes of stone fruit and honeysuckle come through, then it unfolds into a nice carmel. There is a nice white pepper / oak hit on the tail end, and a suprisingly longer finish than expected. Smokeye Hill Barrel Proof Straight Bourbon Whiskey
Bourbon — Colorado, USA
Reviewed September 18, 2024 (edited October 23, 2024)Nose is deep and rich caramel with hints of molasses, nutty dark chocolate, slight coffee. Early corn / soil note on it too - almost comes out as a granola Palette is as rich as the nose. All this dark flavors from the nose, but with much more of a molasses sweetness. Moving into the finish there is a slight smokiness that rolls into kind of a woody off flavor on the finish…pretty minute though, just slightly over oaked. A nice heat comes in on the finish that rolls into a dark caramel finish that hangs. Very good overall, but I don’t thin up to the hype. T8ke: 7.490.0 USD per Bottle -
Sagamore Spirit Double Oak Rye
Rye — Maryland, USA
Reviewed September 11, 2024 (edited September 18, 2024)Nose has a very rich resinous wood hit off the bat, with spicy and rich fig-maple notes underneath. Almost a little leather / tobacco, but sweet. Slight mintiness, though it could be the oak char. Palette has a lot of brown sugar / maple / toasted oak sweetness up front. Unfolds into fig / dried fruit notes with some oak tannin punch coming in on the back. T8ke: 7.4 -
1792 Aged Twelve Years
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed September 10, 2024 (edited September 13, 2024)Nose is pretty sweet with light dried fruit- apricot, raisin, and a peppery coriander spice. Almost a run / brandy tang. Some baking spice & resinous wood. Palette is spicy up front - white pepper coriander, then unfolds into dried fruit and caramel. Spice comes back a little on the finish. Overall very good with some complexity. Enjoyable, but not mind blowing. T8ke: 7.1 -
Smoke Wagon Private Barrel Bourbon
Bourbon — Indiana (bottled in Nevada), USA
Reviewed August 25, 202439-8, 39% Rye mashbill - 60.03% abv, 6yrs 10mo Nose is hazelnut rum with a peppery vanilla, slight fatty mushroom tang, non-fruity sweetness that maybe has a slight apricot note, oat. Palette has a big honey-rum sweetness, the honey sticks out with a slight honey-suckle floral note, there is a deeper nutty-caramel behind it. Finish is great. The honey sweetness hangs and a nice Kentucky hug that kicks in. Relatively long finish T8ke: 8.3 -
Smell is deep, rich, and must with a lot of spice around the edges - cinnamon, pepper, maybe some citrus, and some floral / Earthy notes. There is almost a stone fruit note mixed in there too. Flavor is not what I expected - a very mute unoffending start with some caramel body standing out, with a vegetal white pepper spice that then starts to kick in. Finish is somewhat flat with that spice lingering as more of an oak flavor with some sweetness. Almost feels like drinking a flat soda in a way. Not bad though - is pretty interesting. T8ke 6.7
