Maker's Mark Cask Strength
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed September 3, 2022 (edited October 28, 2022)Great dark color. Nose has vanilla and a subtle nutty flavor, like almond or cashew. Taste has plenty of vanilla (more like a more adult vanilla, like custard as opposed to soft serve). The high proof actually isn’t as harsh as I expected. Little orange/citrus early on. This is followed by some chocolate and burnt sugar. Finish is moderate. -
Nose is full of apple, a bit ethanolly. I get a lot of sweet early elements. Brown sugar Caramel, vanilla, and some of that apple. Honestly, the most unique part of this pour is that I’d actually drinks pretty cold. It’s at room temperature, but it seems chilled. Pretty harsh bite, especially for under 100 proof. However this is made up with a great warm and long finish. A little char and some clear oak at this point. Slight tobacco. Honestly it grew on me throughout the drink and the harshness improved. Will have to taste again after a primer.

Round 2 of drinking this straight. It primarily turned into a cocktail whiskey for me in between rounds. I still get a lot of ethanol on the nose for only 92 proof. I also get some sweetness on the nose, but it’s a little more like molasses now. Bottle has been open for 9 months now which seems to have done it some good. Still relatively simple. There’s a little more fruitiness and sweetness up front. Cherry and vanilla maybe? Followed by the more distinctive leather and coffee grounds. Not the smoothest drink. Finish is actually not bad and seems pretty long actually. If it was a little less bitter, the finish would be great. Smoke flavor at the end.

Henry McKenna 10 Year Bottled in Bond Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed August 14, 2022 (edited August 20, 2022)A little lighter in color. Nose is pretty oaky and maybe some brown sugar. Very smooth for the proof. The heat comes a little later with brown sugar and plenty of oak. Overall simple but the finish is the best part. Long oaky and much more complex than the beginning. Now I get the vanilla, leather, and oak. Great great finish! -
Barrell Seagrass
Rye — (bottled in) Kentucky, Multiple Countries
Reviewed August 14, 2022 (edited September 8, 2022)This is an incredible bottle and I will miss it when it’s gone. Nose is cinnamon and vanilla. There is a little ethanol right away which is very reasonable for the proof. Very fruity and creamy. I think Of the peach cream savers. Medium finish that keeps with the spice and fruitiness. -
This bottle came from a lottery win. I’m really surprised to not see more reviews mention cherry. I get a lot on the nose as well as a creamy sweetness. The cherry is also present at the beginning with a little citrus and apple, but fades to that crème brûlée middle. This is sweet and comforting. Finishes some nice oak and graham cracker flavor. Finish is a bit shorter, but that would be my only complaint. Of course this is extremely smooth and if I wasn’t concerned with how hard it is to find, I could easily do some damage to this bottle. Grateful for the lottery win!

Uncle Nearest 1884 Small Batch
Tennessee Whiskey — Tennessee, USA
Reviewed July 24, 2022 (edited April 20, 2023)I have been following the story of this company for over a year now, so I was very excited to give it my first try. I definitely get nice sweet dark cherry up front. There’s a little ethanol-y mid taste, but this rounds out well with smoke and coffee. Now I like the whiskey and the story! -
Received this as a gift from a friend from his local distillery. It’s a really fun craft find. Rather simple and does taste a little young. Smooth for a rye. Lots of tobacco, licorice and black pepper throughout. There’s a little up front ethanol flavor and the finish is a little short. The rye flavor comes in towards the end. Makes a really good black Manhattan!

Picked this up on vacation for my dad (scotch drinker) and I (bourbon drinker), hoping for a good in between. Pretty successful mission. The toast avoids bitter and burnt flavor. Lots of oak and the smoke flavor brings forth tobacco and licorice flavors later. All this is on the back end as the initial taste is modest, yet smooth. Lastly, I get a little citrus at the very end which adds a lot to this experience for me. Overall, not my typical profile, but a great one to share with a scotch drinker.

Willett Family Estate Single Barrel Kentucky Straight Bourbon 6 Year
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed May 22, 2022I love the willett heat. This one is a little harsher than what I expected, but delicious none the less. The nose is full of caramel. The front end is very smooth and still caramel. Then once the heat kicks in, there is lots of leather and coffee. Great lingering warmth.
