I bought this really as a cocktail rye and that’s what it will stay as. Surprisingly soft for a rye. It does seem like a fine “gateway” rye due to the low heat. Generally sweet with brown sugar and nutty qualities. Finish is probably it’s most pleasant quality as it lingers much longer than what I would expect. Not super complex, but should make a good black Manhattan.

I love whistle pig and I love the story of this whiskey. Very pale in color. It has the consistent wheat and rye flavoring that I love. Not as much heat as I would expect. I get some of the fruitiness from the wine barrel and some late licorice as well. Very diverse flavor profile, but it does to be at competition with itself.

Little Book Chapter 5: The Invitation
Blended American Whiskey — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed September 11, 2021 (edited October 23, 2021)This was an extremely lucky find and I don’t typically have as much luck finding bourbons. Nose is maple and cinnamon. Classic bookers brand with great tolerable heat that comes a little later and lingers. I still get plenty of maple throughout as well as corn. A bit of vanilla bean and cinnamon roll just before the finish. Buy if you find. Compares with a lot of the pricier whiskeys/bourbons that I’ve had. -
Wilderness Trail Bottled in Bond Small Batch Bourbon (High Rye Bourbon)
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed September 2, 2021This is a pretty fun and flavorful bourbon. The malted barley is very present, especially with its moderately long and warm finish. Some upfront oak and smoke followed by some spice and pine. Not my typical profile of choice, but will really enjoy this again in the fall. -
Blood Oath Bourbon Pact No. 7
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed August 29, 2021 (edited November 26, 2021)I can’t get enough of the complexity. First drink is neat but I believe it would taste completely different with a cube (I will test this out later this week). I get a little more bitterness than I like towards the end. I get sweet caramel and winter berries. I get some pine and spice later on, but this also has plenty of honey. -
Stellum Bourbon
Bourbon — (bottled in) Kentucky, USA
Reviewed August 28, 2021 (edited December 3, 2021)Very pleased for this value. Light in color. Nose is bright, almost citrusy. Vanilla from start to finish, but secondary flavors evolve from berries and lemon peels to spices and coffee. Great finish with the warmth waiting to ounce until the very end. Will definitely try the rye in hopes for an earlier heat profile. -
Peerless Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed August 28, 2021 (edited October 6, 2021)Nose is a little too alcoholy for me. Awesome color. A lot of heat up front. I like the sweet flavors to pair with the heat. I get a lot of corn, cherry vanilla, and plum. Moderate finish with a sort of off brand cola. Overall, I would probably enjoy it more as a night cap with a cube than how I tried it (mid afternoon neat).
