Tastes

It tastes like very little. However, it doesn't have the bad stuff that cheaper stuff has, like a harshness or a burn or an ethanol taste. It is definitely worthy on the rocks, although I would never say it's recommended. For the price, for the reliability, for the number of places it's found, definitely a good option for everyday use. The Heineken of whisky - available everywhere, isn't bad, but isn't inspiring. $52

Glenfiddich 12 Year
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed July 28, 2016 (edited November 6, 2017)A good option on the rocks when there aren't better options. Smell is like acid but taste is like vanilla and aftertaste is chocolate and raspberries. There's definitely a burn (not too strong but there). I'm not sure where it fits - it's very good neat but not a world-beater, not worth drinking neat over other options, even with the price discount. On the rocks it's just not quite right - good? Yes. Does it make me excited to drink on the rocks? Not really. I think this is a good option but in the end, a pass. EDITORS NOTE: this was the last one I drank in a full night of tasting so if there was ever a whisky due a second chance later in life, it's this one. $52 UPDATE #2: Have always felt like I needed to go back to this and give it a fair review. Finally bought a bottle, at least a year after originally tasting it. My comments haven’t changed. It’s not bad neat, definitely better than a Jameson or a Johnny Walker Black. It’s definitely better on the rocks, takes the pretty significant edge off that you have to deal with when you have it neat. But again, for the price you have to pay, it’s just not worth buying. A good option in a vacuum and when surrounded by nothing but bad options, but when you have a full collection to choose from it just doesn’t make sense to order this. It’s not better than any of the competitors in its tier. -
This feels like Bullett, like a strong Scottish whisky that burns, like a Jameson. The smell at the front is of that classic whisky smell, like any other cheap bourbon or classic American whiskey you can think of. BUT, the taste itself is pretty good - smooth, a tad fruity, not smoky. The roots of Suntory come out when you taste it. Unlike the Harmony, this actually has flavor, so even as a neat sip this is better than the Harmony. On top of that, it's very very enjoyable on the rocks. Honestly, this tastes the way you want it to - a good whiskey that's great on the rocks/keeps its flavor for a good price. Like the Johnny Walker Red, if you use it correctly it's fantastic. Win-win for the summer. UPDATE: the longer it's on the rocks, the better. Summer classic. $55 Update: the longer it's on the rocks the worse it is. Honestly, not sure what I was thinking the first time I reviewed this. Maybe I was already drunk. I would say it tastes great neat, like a rookie version of the better Suntory whiskies. Sweet but not as sweet as Hibiki, not harsh, good for the money but not the best neat. The real surprise tho is how much I don't like it with ice. I bought a bottle for home, tried it with ice, thought the taste was all ethanol and no sweetness, and have basically turned my opinion around on it. So yea. Funny how that works.

Glenfiddich 15 Year Solera Reserve
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed July 28, 2016 (edited December 25, 2017)This is really good. Smells like candy, tastes like gummy bears. Very smooth. Like a dessert, a vanilla birthday cake. Very good tho, can't say I don't enjoy it. Just doesn't taste like whisky, if Macallan is a lager this is a saison. I'm not sure where it fits in my life, but it should stay in circulation. Fun, candy like aftertaste which is nice, instead of just smoke smoke and more smoke. $65
