Evan Williams Single Barrel Vintage
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed July 12, 2018 (edited December 21, 2025)Price, quality, taste... can't be beat for a vintaged single barrel. Very consistent and released at 42 to 44 ABV. At the price point you can mix this or sip it with or without ice. Sweet corn and caramel bourbon goodness, vanilla oak and a little smoke. Round and soft with rye spice and mint in the finish. Easy to find anytime, a go-to bourbon. Can't miss. July 2022: A SAD SAD day now that this is only available in Kentucky. The EW BIB is OK, and the Black and 1783 are...meh. I will miss this old standby. Poor choice, Heaven Hill !!! 😟🤬 -
Sweet grass and peppery grain on the nose. 110 and a little hot without ice, but rich, spicy grain and mint, and vanilla oak and leather in the mouth. Clean smokey finish. Neat or with an ice cube, and great in a cocktail. 4.5 rate. 2023: the more I try this the more I'm impressed, even as the price climbs and availability falls. Now my rye of choice. Give it a 5!

High West Son of Bourye
Other Whiskey — (bottled in) Utah, USA
Reviewed July 12, 2018 (edited August 3, 2018)MGPI sourced whiskey and mixed by HW, but they do it well (if too pricey!). Spice and orange and sweet grass vanilla on the nose. Sweet cherry stone fruit and vanilla, oak, and then spicy grassy rye comes on in the finish. Medium body, light color. Easy to drink and appreciate as a high rye bourbon. -

American Blended Whiskey — Indiana & Kentucky (Bottled in) Utah, USA

High West Rendezvous Rye
Rye — (bottled in) Utah, USA
Reviewed July 12, 2018 (edited August 16, 2019)MGPI product, well mixed by HW, but more expensive than it should be. Grassy and spicy, sweet grain, rich and warm. Sipping or cocktails, can't go wrong. -
2018: Light, needs more time in oak to age and deepen. Light color and taste, but an interesting run by HW aging their own juice. 2025: revisited an open bottle. Light straw color and little legs. Tropical fruit, banana, musty grain, thin and astringent. I think I was generous because of the novelty of HW's own distillate in 2018, but that has faded. They have proved over time they are good at blending MGP juice, but not so much at distilling their own at a MGP-quality level, especially given the prices they charge. Sorry. As Porter Rockwell (the guy pictured on tge bottle) toasted Mark Twain, "Wheat!"
