Honestly wasn’t too impressed. Nose wasn’t really all that and the taste (while good) was nothing worth the hype and you wouldn’t catch me dead paying secondary prices for it. This quality could be easily obtained elsewhere for less. I think the main reason many people like the pappy line is because there’s almost no ethanol burn or they mentally prepare themselves to like it based off what they paid for it as well as the reputation. Maybe my expectations were way too high. I’ll gladly let it keep the spotlight off many other options however. Hoping the 20 and 23 are much better.

Forgive my ignorance, I'm mostly into bourbon and this is the only Irish whiskey I've had besides plain Jameson. I did my research for a while on this bottle and was surprised when I poured it, that it had that peat/grain/scotch smell. I was expecting vanilla buttery goodness like Jameson but again, that's all I have to go off of. I will say the apple lingers for a long time and it smells more like scotch than it tastes, which is good for me. I don't regret buying it in the least, just wasn't the super sweet bouquet I was expecting from all the reviews from multiple sources. Should be a solid stepping stone into other Irish whiskeys. Any recommendations are welcome.

David Nicholson Reserve Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky (bottled in Missouri), USA
Reviewed August 14, 2020 (edited October 16, 2020)Pretty muted for 100 proof. Nothing about this pour makes me want to go in for another sip. Don't get me wrong, it's not bad. Just not worth buying another bottle either. Trying this again a few weeks later, I don't think the people here know what "rye spice" is, I get none on this. It's like drinking watered down maple syrup.29.0 USD per Bottle -
Willett Family Estate Small Batch Rye 4 Year
Rye — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed April 7, 2020 (edited June 11, 2020)I think high hopes ruined this for me. Luckily I only paid $23 for this bottle which is a steal. Unfortunately, one of the most disappointing things for me to notice in a whiskey is when it's too young or when the lack of age detracts from the overall experience. Which, 4 years for a rye isn't really all that young. Other than that it would be a decent sipper, but I think a 6+ year would be a show stopper. Final Verdict, if you see it: get it and try it for yourself, you might fall in love. But if it's a dollar over retail, I'd hold off. -
John J Bowman Single Barrel Bourbon
Bourbon — Virginia, USA
Reviewed March 25, 2020 (edited November 13, 2020)Not gonna lie, when I heard this was similar to Blanton's I was skeptical. Keep in mind, we're comparing a single barrel to another single barrel, lots of variation there. On the nose I get a lot of tart cream soda with some honey and a little sawdust. Gentle nose, but unique and pleasant. On the palate, it seriously tastes like some Blanton's bottles I've had. Not as bold but damn close. Vanilla, toffee, chocolate, caramel, oak, some char, spice, she's got it all and well balanced but like the nose, it's very gentle. Drinks more like a 90 proof or lower not the 100 it is. Medium-long finish. I wouldn't go as far to say this is a backup for Blanton's but a damn good dram on its own. Maybe I got a good bottle, either way, I'm impressed. -
Rabbit Hole Dareringer Straight Bourbon Finished in PX Sherry Casks
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed March 20, 2020So young on the nose it covers anything else up. Follows suit albeit to a much lesser degree on the palate. You get a hint of the Sherry notes. Medium-short finish. Not bad, but not worth it at the price range either. Hopefully time will let it open up more, for now I wish it had more time aging to give it the depth it deserves. Final Verdict: I'd been looking for this bottle for a while so I grabbed it for around $80. For $50, hate to say it but Angel's Envy gives me a much better nose, more complexity and better flavor than Dareringer. -
Russell's Reserve Single Barrel Rye
Rye — Kentucky , USA
Reviewed August 6, 2019 (edited December 25, 2020)I'm blown away by this offering from WT. The single barrel bourbon was my all time readily available favorite. This has a decent aroma, not very deep. On the palate it's flavors come in perfect waves of oak fading to sweet vanilla and leathery tobacco which then moves on to a very well balanced peppery spice. Finish is long and delicious. Maybe I got a great barrel but I'm looking forward to trying another bottle already. -
