Four Roses Small Batch Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed August 24, 2018 (edited October 27, 2018)I’m not getting anything special here to warrant a 92 rating. It’s thin tasting. The slight barrel notes in the nose don’t make it to the palate. Three quarters of the bottle is gone so cant say I didn’t give it a chance. -
By Day Four of a 6-day cruise, I was getting "scotched out". The cruise ship bars stocked a number of scotch whiskies and I was trying them all. In need of a change up, I asked for a rye with two ice cubes. This is what they poured for me. And a fine rye whiskey it was! It had a slight sweetness followed by wonderful barrel notes of vanilla, caramel and oak. I was very happy to leave the scotch behind and finish the cruise with my new found rye. Now if I can only find it here in Maryland.

Bluecoat American Dry Gin
Modern Gin — Pennsylvannia, USA
Reviewed July 6, 2017 (edited February 27, 2018)This gin is sharp - it has a clear, crisp juniper and citrus nose, and a very crisp and quick juniper flavor, followed immediately by a host of different notes rising from both the mash bill and the botanicals. The grains come through, especially the corn (earthy)and rye (peppery spice). The botanicals impart a very nice citrus tone - lemons, oranges and grapefruit. Adding a bit of water tones down the juniper, enhances the botanicals and brings out a nuanced pastis note. The finish continues with lime, pepper and spruce. -
Beefeater London Dry Gin (47%)
London Dry Gin — England
Reviewed July 6, 2017 (edited October 16, 2017)Just starting to explore gins. I have a bottle of Beefeaters that's been kicking around for summertime G&Ts but never actually tasted it on its own. FWIW this 1.75 L bottle has been around a few years and is about half full, so I don't know how accurate my experience was. But I found the nose sharply juniper-ish, much more so than the "rounder" juniper flavor I tasted, along with notes of citrus, sweetness and a lingering anise-pepper. Tasting it side-by-side with Bluecoat, I found the Beefeaters much more mellow, but again, that could be its age (I know I'm getting mellower with age!). Dry glass- Christmas trees. -
I'm a mezcal neophyte and don't have much to compare to (two to be exact, both thanks to my buddy Pranay). We had dinner last night at Tico's restaurant in downtown Boston with my daughter, her husband and her in laws and I was surprised to see they had a selection of mezcals. So while everyone else was enjoying their margaritas I had this mezcal neat. Smokey, earthy, vegetal, and a bit salty are apparently common characteristics to mezcals, at least the three that I've now experienced. I find the smokiness and earthiness the most pleasurable aspects. None of my companions wanted to try it which worked well for me because I wasn't sure I really wanted to share. This spirit confirms my quest to experience the spectrum of mezcals though oddly, I currently have no interest in trying tequilas. Dry glass - earth. Music - Wicked Rain/Across 110th Street by Los Lobos and Bobby Womack.
