Macallan Fine Oak 10 Year
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed April 29, 2016 (edited August 5, 2017)This doesn't hold a candle to anything else in the range. Carries the Macallan house style, but is honestly not that much better than something I would shoot at a bar. -
Macallan Rare Cask
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed April 29, 2016 (edited August 5, 2017)Had a taste at Raise the Macallan, and probably won't ever get to sample again (but I can dream). Not sure if I would say this is worth such a high pricetag. It carries the same dried rich fruits that define the Macallan house style, and evokes the sense of the 12 year and 18 year sherries, only this one has a slightly deeper flavor, and carries a noticeably longer finish. It would be a lie to say that I didn't want one of these on my shelf! -
Sweet maple sugar and woody nuts on the nose. The aroma is light and inoffensive. Also light on the palate as black peppery spice continues on. Continued sugar notes with hints of nut and oranges. A swift prominent burn but the flavor continues on through it. Not terribly complex, but a nice dram neat. Continued tastings reveal charred wood. Haven't had with water yet. This brand is advertised as a mixer, and I do believe it would do very well in an old fashioned.

Slaughter House American Whiskey
Other Whiskey — (Bottled in California), USA
Reviewed April 7, 2016Very intriguing. I've only had once, but I've never had anything like it before! -
The entry level Dalmore is just that. Plain, simple, and generic. I get primarily oak, woodiness, and bourbon spice. Stick around a little longer and you'll finally catch some orange, with more spice in the finish. Do yourself a favor and go for the 15 year instead. Expensive, but a vast improvement, and has stand out character.

I've had the bottle for six months and finally opened it, so let's get down to business. This dram has a sweet and lightly peated nose. It doesn't have that iodine phenol character that heavy Islays give off. Some maple mood and green apples as an afterthought. The palate itself is actually rather simple and clean, with more of those green apples and pears. A minty burn as it goes down, but not so much character beyond that. The finish gives off wood spice, and hints of medicinal notes. To me I think this is a great introduction to Japanese whiskey and general scotch characteristics. I will consider this both a great entry level and intermediate whiskey.
