Tastes

After a couple of tries it still reminds me too much of Elijah Craig 12 Year (my review of that one: 'Okay, but it's almost too mellow while also not being all that smooth. I prefer more spice.') And for the price I would definitely go with Elijah Craig, though I'm also more likely to just drink something else. Maybe I don't like older bourbons (I do prefer regular Bulleit to the ten-year variety.)

Better than Beam when I'm looking for a cheap bourbon.

Tastes way higher than 100 proof--it actually reminds me of Maker's Mark Cask Strength, but a bit less intense and actually less complex. Believe it or not, I think I prefer Henry McKenna in the battle of the single-barrel bottled-in-bond.

Batch 144: from the moment I opened it and then slowly consumed a dram I had one thought--this smells/tastes like Mount Gay Extra Old. Now I like a good rum, and that is one of my favorites, but it's a bit strange coming from a whiskey. Update: after a back-to-back comparison I would say that my Stranahan's tastes like what spiced Mount Gay XO would taste like if they made it.

Way spicier than the regular Jefferson's, with a nice hot finish, but it tastes thin to me, like I want more oiliness from it.

Nice, nothing wrong with it, but for me it doesn't stand out. Probably not spicy enough.

I was very surprised at how good this was--and how many single-barrel bond bourbons are there? Update: I've now had the Col. E. H. Taylor single-barrel bond, and I like this better.

A more interesting TN whiskey than the more famous one, still a trifle sweet; I'd rather drink Maker's Mark if I wanted a sweet whiskey.
