Ironroot Harbinger (115 Proof)
Bourbon — Texas, USA
Reviewed February 2, 2020 (edited March 30, 2022)Tried this at the distillery. You get that caramel/molasses note with some spice. Also deep, rich fruit flavors come out with some oak. Very good and has some nice earthy flavors from the multiple corn mash. Try it if your looking for something different than your typical bourbon. -
Ironroot Promethean (16 Months)
Bourbon — Texas, USA
Reviewed February 2, 2020 (edited November 26, 2020)I tried this at the distilllery and really enjoyed it. There’s so much complexity in this whiskey. You get some ripe fruit notes like stone fruits with dark berries like cherries. It’s balanced with some darker notes like chocolate/cocoa, wood, and smoke char. This is definitely an exploration whiskey and stands out in a lineup. It’s at a respectable proof that allows the flavors to be dense without being floored by the alcohol burn of a casks strength. Highly recommended entry point for whiskey fans who are curious about Ironroot. -
Update: My girlfriend tried this in a lineup with 3 other bourbons. This one was her favorite. She loved the floral notes too. Extra points for uniqueness. The nose is spicy with deep, ripe fruit notes. There’s some herbal notes there too. The taste is different than most bourbons I’ve had. A hint of sweetness on the initial taste is replaced by long floral notes with some deep wood and cherry notes. The finish reminds me of dark chocolate covered black cherries. This is yummy stuff!

I like it. I had this at the distillery, and it was a pleasant change of pace. This whiskey has that sweeter, corn flavor with a hint of vanilla, but there’s much more complexity in this than say Mellow Corn. The variety of corns used in this adds layers of spice on the palette that I really liked. Personally, I like starting with a dram of Mellow Corn as a “warmup” whiskey and then pour a couple ounces of Hubris afterwards. Helps me appreciate the nuance of flavors in this even more. One of the best corn whiskeys!

I recently began my journey in peated/smoky whiskies. I haven't tried much. Between this and Laphroaig 10, I like Ardbeg 10 a bit more. I went to my local bar for a couple ounce pour of whiskey. I originally went there to try Balcones Brimstone, but they were out. So instead, I ordered this. Bartender opened the bottle and immediately the bar patrons began commenting on the smell. Some loved it, others turned their noses. I was excited. The nose had intense smoky fruit flavors with some spice. The peat hit me hard on the taste. After a moment to acclimate, I began picking up flavors of citrus, green apples, and some sweetness like honey. I loved it. It took some time to find the sweetness in this scotch. If you're trying this for the first time, be patient, and it will reward you with a nuanced experienced. I look forward to trying the other Ardbeg offerings.11.0 USD per Pour

I like this a lot. The only islays I’ve had were Ardbeg 10 and Laphroiag 10, so I’m not well versed with peated whiskeys. I decided to grab a 50 ml bottle of Bunnahabhain 12 yr at Specs out of curiosity. Nose was nice with sherry scents with some light citrus, grape, and apple. I detect some peat, but I had to dig for it as it blends with the wood notes. The initial taste was similar to the nose but with spice and more wood. There’s a little brine in there too. The finish is where I detected some peat and was my favorite part. Nowhere close to the amount of peat like Laphroiag. The peat in this whiskey was just an accent that helps round off the flavor. I love this.

High West Campfire (Discontinued)
Blended American Whiskey — (bottled in Utah), Multiple Countries
Reviewed January 6, 2020 (edited January 31, 2020)Peat and vanilla taste on palette. Smoke quickly dissipates and left with barrel char. It’s a great blend of new and old world flavors. One of the better American peated whiskeys I’ve tried
