Balcones Texas Single Malt Rum Cask Finished
American Single Malt — Texas, USA
Reviewed March 12, 2020 (edited January 12, 2022)Tried this at the distillery. Heavy caramelized sweetness. Definitely add some water to this one. It’s molasses, figs, and caramel. Thick is the best way I can describe. Take your time and keep adding water to get more of the fruitiness of the barley to come out. -
Texas Silver Star Spirit Whiskey
Spirit — (bottled in) Texas, USA

Not a fan. It’s musty. I’m trying to think of a better description, but I taste a weird mustiness with dust from the corn and spice with vanilla. It’s interesting but not sure I’d drink it again. On the nose, there’s vanilla with dark fruit which I enjoyed. The palate was not as enjoyable. I would love to know how much this pecan yeast affects the taste. If someone were to ask me what’s a good example of a Texas Whiskey, I wouldn’t give them this. I’d reach for a Balcones, Ironroot, or Garrison instead

Weller Special Reserve Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed March 5, 2020 (edited September 14, 2020)My first wheated bourbon. Not bad overall. On the nose I get honey, apples, some citrus and maybe some cherry. It’s, also, more floral than I was expecting. I admit, I like the nose more than the taste. On taste, I get some vanilla and honey and a little bit of apple. I was surprised by the spice on the tongue. It’s spicy throughout and finishes with some wood and char. The finish isn’t very long. Maybe a bit thin. Overall, I enjoyed this. It’s an easy sipper, but I would not pay more than MSRP. I heard of some stores selling this for $30+ and that’s too much. I got lucky and found this for $20.20.0 USD per Bottle -
*Worth trying at least once. Gains extra points for uniqueness* The scent of burnt wood and bonfire overwhelmed the nose. After some time to acclimate, I began to smell sweet buttery corn and honey. It’s quite interesting. The taste was a LOT of char and wood. It’s also very dry. Like a bonfire in your mouth. But once I got a few sips in I started to taste nuttiness, spice, and some salt . On the finish, you’re left with char. BUT after I left the bar, I started to taste sweet corn again. I’ve never had a whiskey jump back and forth between smokey/spicy to sweet as I was tasting it. It’s very unique. I’ll admit I didn’t love this at first, but I do find it fascinating. I’ll have to taste this again to see if I’d be willing to invest in a bottle.11.0 USD per Pour
