Highland Park Valknut
Single Malt — Islands, Scotland
Reviewed March 14, 2020 (edited October 14, 2022)This is a curious whiskey, lots of interesting scents and flavors, but all a little disjointed. Initially strong diesel and peat on the nose, after a few minutes these ebb while sherry, barley, vanilla, powdered chocolate and stewed prunes appear. Rich, oily and a little young and hot on the palate with cereal grains, honey, vanilla, walnuts and a hint of sherry and diesel. The long finish has spicy, sweet and savory notes. -
Auchentoshan The Bartender's Malt
Single Malt — Lowlands, Scotland
Reviewed March 9, 2020 (edited December 17, 2020)Scumptuous nose with floral, chocolate, orange and malt notes plus a hint of smoke. The palate starts off a little rough, grungy for lack of a better word, more Neal Young and Crazy Horse than Nirvana, but it morphs, sip by sip, into a Chris Cornell like transcendent beauty touching all the notes of the nose and adding a raspy spice. The finish is long, peppery and satisfifying. -

Compass Box Oak Cross
Blended Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed February 18, 2020 (edited October 2, 2020)Vanilla, banana and coconut creme on the nose. Silken entry on the palate with vanilla, oak and spices. The medium length finish has some spice and dry oaky notes. There's some astringency throughout that holds this back from a better score. -
Kavalan Distillery Select No. 1
Single Malt — Taiwan
Reviewed February 18, 2020 (edited October 30, 2020)Orange zest, honey dew and baking spices on the nose. Spicy entry on the palate with apples, honey and some woody notes. Finish is medium length, spicy and a little bitter. This was intended as a mixer and is best suited for that purpose. Not a sipper. -
Glen Garioch 8 Year (Old Particular)
Single Malt — Highland , Scotland
Reviewed February 17, 2020 (edited September 14, 2020)This single malt, single cask, non color added, non chill-filtered whiskey is bottled at cask strength from a refill hogshead. Only 290 bottles were filled. If you were fortunate enough to get one, you know what a gem you found. I personally needed a lot of water to tame the cask strength and young heat, but what incredible scents and flovors in an 8 yo whiskey. Smokey, malty, peaty, seashore, sweet and savory on the nose. Thick, coating palate with buttery cream, vanilla custard, and sweet tea. Sweet and spicy medium finish.
