Strathmill 12 Year Flora & Fauna
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed April 18, 2017 (edited March 10, 2018)I find myself surprisingly liking this whisky, and I'm impressed by its complexity: brewed tea, lemon peels, the faintest hints of smoke, and what I can only describe as a bowl of Corn Flakes with granulated sugar sprinkled on it - quite delicious. The finish is likewise robust and satisfying. -
God this is SOOOOOO GOOD! It tastes as if Gargamel and Getafix devised a magical potion together, with the express purpose of enchanting anyone who would be so lucky as to taste it. Where does one even begin with perfection? Imagine eating grilled dates on the barbecue, with a bowl of cereal in your hand and a Malboro on your lips. It's sweet and smoky and divine all that once, with a full-bodied and oily texture that lingers in your mouth for dozens of minutes. I need to buy a case of this!

I'm giving this one 3 stars, which is actually high praise for a rye whisky, seeing I do not generally like them. That's not to say this thing is necessarily great, because it comes across as a tad under proofed (even at 50%) and with a finish that is short and flat. The rye note is however pleasant and meshes well with the notes of charred oak. There are also hints of dried fruit, particularly cherries, that complement this spirit well.

Interesting, and in some ways complex, but there's something towards the finish that I just don't like. The nose is very clean and fresh, with hints of honey and a certain herbaceous note. Quite sweet actually. The palate exhibits barley and vanilla, progressing towards a finish I find a little flat and bitter. It's ok, but not more than that.

Aberlour 12 Year Double Cask Matured
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed April 18, 2017 (edited January 12, 2018)A typical and delicious Aberlour, though strangely I find the 10-year-old to be more complex and delicious. There are hints of pears here, with caramel and butter to the palate. I can't find too many faults with this whisky, and I'm looking forward to having it again. -
Blanton's Original Single Barrel
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed April 17, 2017 (edited January 12, 2018)Twizzlers meets corn and oak, and really good stuff, I must say. The palate is a tad dry, but all in all this is a whiskey you want to try. I especially enjoy how typical yet "off the beaten path" this bourbon tastes, with enough mystery and unpredictability to require multiple tastings. Enjoy! -
Knockando 18 Year 1994
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed April 17, 2017 (edited August 13, 2017)I'm not sure if I dislike this, or hate it, so I'm giving it an ambivalent 3 stars and leaving the question open. This whisky is sherried, yes, but not in pleasant fashion - it's basically honey and spoiled fruit stew to the nose. The palate is completely flat and weak, and the finish regretfully long. Yeah, it's mostly a 2. Anyway... -
Michter's US*1 Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed April 17, 2017 (edited January 12, 2018)This is a delicious bourbon, with a strong nose and a buttery texture to the palate. There are generous notes of vanilla and cherries, with a subtle touch of pecans and caramel. The charred oak rounds out a great finish. I like a lot. -
Masterson's Straight Rye Whiskey 10 Year
Rye — Canada
Reviewed April 8, 2017 (edited December 30, 2021)Man that is some good stuff, and reminds me that Jim Murray picked the wrong Canadian rye as Canada's best offering. The rye note is warm and welcoming, never overpowering, with dill and vanilla added for good measure. There are also some subtle banana and molasses aromas if you search long enough, adding complexity to this fine whisky. The finish is smooth as a baby, calling your mouth back for another round. Recommended! -
A nice bourbon, but I think the 92 is a little on the high-end. It has a nice start with notes of caramel, vanilla and a touch of apples. On the tongue the cinnamon is quite pronounced - so far so good. The finish is where things take a turn for the mediocre, with water unable to remove some of the bitterness and burn. It's alright.
