Glenglassaugh Evolution
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed March 19, 2017 (edited June 8, 2023)Wonderful whiskey with notes of peaches and charred oak. There are also elements of lemons and vanilla that really add a layer of complexity and deliciousness. The finish is itself smooth and long, beckoning you for another sip. I'm currently on my seventh. Cheers! -
Westland American Oak American Single Malt
American Single Malt — Washington , USA
Reviewed March 19, 2017 (edited March 28, 2018)I'm giving this one three stars, but I think I'm being generous. For every aroma I found pleasant, I was met with another note that harmed the experience. Close your eyes and imagine maltiness, maple syrup, clove and vanilla trying to play nice with glue and rotten wood... Not very pleasant. -
Armorik Sherry Finish Single Malt
Single Malt — Brittany , France
Reviewed March 19, 2017 (edited June 5, 2017)Vive le whiskey Français, and what a great discover! The thing about sherry is that it isn't unlike a hairpiece. If you have a full set of hair and use a hairpiece as extensions, the finished look is natural and seamless. But if you're bald and walking around with a toupee... you're only fooling yourself. Point is: this is a great whiskey because the new-made spirit was well-crafted before aging, and you can tell. The sherry... just a wonderful bonus. From start to finish both the nose and palate are complex and delicious with predictable fruity notes , and the finish is smooth and long. Bravo! -
Glenlivet 21 Year Archive
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed March 16, 2017 (edited October 27, 2018)Glenlivet whiskies are always a little bit of a hit or miss with me (similar to Glenfiddichs), and this one is a miss unfortunately. If I could sum it up in a single sentence: it comes across as something that should have been bottled earlier. It just tasted overcasked, which is something I have rarely come across. Yes it's fruity (apples) and honeyed in the way you expect a Speyside, but the wood elements just don't work overall, like a tone deaf vocalist singing loudly in a choir. It's just too bad. -
Disclaimer: I'm not a huge fan of Bushmills as a distillery, and this expression solidified my prejudice. The whiskey is pleasant enough with the ex-bourbon casks being the predominant flavour influence, as vanilla and honey hit your nose. The palate is fruity, with a difficult to identify aroma (sometimes grapes, sometimes cherries and sometimes apricots). And while the finish is pleasant, it's hard to come away inspired here.

Tyrconnell 10 Year Madeira Cask Finish
Single Malt — Ireland
Reviewed March 16, 2017 (edited December 12, 2017)An extremely complex whiskey with at times multiple personalities, the finished product is something everyone should at least try once. There's malted barley, pineapple and pleasant spice that really work well together towards a smooth finish. I enjoyed it. -
My definitive opinion is in the name itself: a very rare occasion it will be before I choose to drink this whiskey again. It already takes guts to release something WITHOUT AGE STATEMENT and sell it for $300 CAD, but then to be this disappointing... The nose is initially pleasant with notes of apples, but that quickly changes as an off-putting odour becomes prominent - imagine aged and slightly rotted wood. The palate has a nice touch of vanilla and caramel, with a finish that's extremely smooth though short, but by then the damage has irreparably been done.

Elijah Craig Small Batch Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed March 4, 2017 (edited June 23, 2017)A template to what a bourbon is understood to taste like, I found this whiskey to be complex and pleasant. The nose had hints of charred oak, a generous dose of vanilla, and cherries. The palate is especially delicious as those spicy notes combine with the other flavours to create great balance. The finish is smooth and lasts. Good stuff! -
This is a tough one... Hard to say whether I'm ambivalent about this whisky or whether I enjoy it. There is truly nothing wrong with it. Problem is there's nothing right about it either. It's just... alright. The nose is herbaceous with the absolute faintest hint of smoke having a threesome with oak. It's all light and lacking in complexity. The palate is more of the same with a touch of salt and caramel, like candy. The finish is fairly medium and pleasurable. Again, it's alright.

Jack Daniel's Gentleman Jack
Tennessee Whiskey — Tennessee, USA
Reviewed March 4, 2017 (edited May 15, 2018)Oh my... Gentleman Jack is no gentleman. He's more like a charming sociopath who lures you in, only to then put you in a compromising situation. From the get-go you're not sure whether you like this or don't - there's hints of great oak charring with a touch of maple syrup, only to then be off-put by overripe banana. The palate has that additional element of vanilla, which works really well until you encounter that damned overripe banana again. It just doesn't work! The finish is light and smooth, and I can see how some people would adore this whiskey. I'm just not one of those people.
