That is some good whiskey! I don't think I have ever four-stared anything Canadian, but this one merits it. The nose is caramel and pleasantly herbaceous, with faint notes of vanilla. The palate is black peppery spiced, with a generous dose of oak. It's medium-to-full bodied and almost syrupy in texture. The finish has a slight burn that is easily remedied with the addition of water.

A complex whiskey with notes of Mizunara oak and spice. The nose is floral and sweet with an almost hint of citrus though not quite. The alleged layer of peat and smoke is hardly there, if at all, with a medium finish that hardly has burn. Overall, it's quite nice and different, though hardly justifying $100 CAD.

Lagavulin Distillers Edition
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland
Reviewed September 29, 2016 (edited August 13, 2017)Very good, and quite different from what you would expect pairing a peated whisky with a Pedro Ximenez cask. The smoke and peat are always there and prominent, but the PX balances the entire experience without actually adding sweetness. There's spice, hints of cinnamon, and an initial nose that feels like walking into a kitchen while someone special is making you bacon. Quite accomplished! -
Ardbeg Corryvreckan
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland
Reviewed September 29, 2016 (edited December 6, 2020)Good bottle of whisky. There's everything you could possibly hope for coming from the region of Islay: smoke, peat, and spice wonderfully balanced. Does that mean I would go out and pay for this bottle? No. But I sure as hell wouldn't refuse a dram. -
Jack Daniel's Tennessee Honey
Other Liqueurs — Tennessee, USA
Reviewed September 18, 2016 (edited September 9, 2017)A travesty to whiskey purists, but what do you get when you blend decent Jack Daniels No. 7 with honey liqueur? Deliciousness, that's what! From the moment your nose encounters hints of banana with sweet honey, followed by your tongue experiencing a smooth syrupy concoction, you know you won't be able to control yourself to just one serving. -
Glenfiddich 18 Year
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed September 17, 2016 (edited November 13, 2020)Heartbreaking. Simply heartbreaking. At a loss of words, let me simply state that this whisky is disappointing. While nothing in particular damages it, the overall experience is woefully inadequate. The nose is woodsy and herbal, the mouthfeel subtly full, and the finish short. -
Tullamore D.E.W. 12 Year Special Reserve
Blended — Ireland
Reviewed September 16, 2016 (edited May 16, 2017)Pleasant, with hints of vanilla and oak. The palate adds a dimension of sweetness, with a finish that is light and satisfying despite being a tad short. -
Bulleit Rye
Rye — Indiana (bottled in Kentucky), USA
Reviewed September 16, 2016 (edited May 16, 2017)Pleasant whiskey, and surprisingly light. The nose and palate are not unlike the Crown Royal Northern Harvest, only without the harsh finish. Regretfully though, it lacks in complexity.
