Nikka Taketsuru Pure Malt (Discontinued)
Blended Malt — Japan
Reviewed September 6, 2016 (edited August 13, 2017)Light and medicinal, with smoke at the nose. The palate is light and largely forgettable. Ultimately it's not a good whisky. -
Water is your best friend here - this is a whisky that comes to life with a few drops of water. The nose is obviously peated, and lacks further complexity after that. In juxtaposition the palate is actually light, and spicy. The overall effect is a drink that lacks finesse yet holds onto its own. Not bad.

Jack Daniel's Old No. 7
Tennessee Whiskey — Tennessee, USA
Reviewed September 6, 2016 (edited October 11, 2017)In a blind test this whisky was surprisingly decent. The corn really comes through at the nose, with almost hints of apples and bananas (quite fruity). The oak's vanillin and flavor also add complexity. Really not bad. -
Glenkinchie 12 Year
Single Malt — Lowlands, Scotland
Reviewed September 2, 2016 (edited October 21, 2017)Light and floral, with spice towards the end. Strong nose and palate, but a flat finish. Decent enough whisky, but certainly not a candidate for a daily dram. -
Tobermory 10 Year
Single Malt — Islands, Scotland
Reviewed September 1, 2016 (edited January 19, 2018)Complex, and quite pleasant. To the eye it's peculiarly yellow, which is expected considering it's only been in cask for 10 years, though also pleasant to know it probably lacks E150 coloring. The nose and palate are herbal, like a backyard garden, with the tongue occasionally experiencing a touch of lemon. The finish is a little short and leaves wanting. Overall a fairly-balanced whiskey, and certainly delicious for the affordable price. -
Balvenie Doublewood 12 Year
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed August 26, 2016 (edited August 22, 2017)Meh. Good whisky for the smelling and tasting impaired. -
Knob Creek Small Batch Bourbon (NAS)
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed August 17, 2016 (edited May 19, 2017)Delicious, from beginning to end. The nose has hints of vanilla and citrus, the palate is similar with the addition of oak and sweetness, the body is almost syrupy, and the finish pleasant. Caramel is also present throughout in the absence of water (though you need plenty at 100 proof).
