Basil Hayden Dark Rye
Other Whiskey — Multiple Countries
Reviewed November 20, 2022 (edited November 25, 2022)I don't pick up the same wine or fruit tasting notes as the reviewer, but there is a definite sweetness, almost syrupy, in the mouth that I assume comes from the port wine. Oak is next in the taste lineup followed by vanilla. Could definitely see this working well in cocktails, though I enjoy it on its own. And for the price it's a good deal.57.75 CAD per Bottle -
Lot No. 40 Dark Oak
Canadian — Ontario, Canada
Reviewed September 10, 2022 (edited December 1, 2022)I like this one. Definite oakiness throughout, which you'd expect from the "double barrelling" process. Somewhat sweeter than average, presumably due to using charred barrels. Caramel and vanilla flavours. No smokiness though despite the charring. I find it a nice sipping whiskey, enjoy it on a bit of ice so that it opens up a bit as the ice melts. -
More and more I'm finding that the whiskies I enjoy most seem to benefit from a cube of ice and maybe a splash of water... although just cooling off in the ice often does the trick. It certainly did in this case. A touch of sweetness and vanilla along with toasted wood, maybe some fruitiness if I concentrate. Not a trace of smoke or peat, and not really a spicy whiskey. It's nice on its own or in a whiskey sour.
