In 1960, José Maria Santana, better known as Zé Santana, began producing cachaça in a small mill powered by a water wheel, in Guaraciaba, Minas Gerais. The product was sold and delivered on the back of donkeys by drovers. The fame of the cachaça spread throughout the region and increased demand, causing the mill to be exchanged for a larger one, powered by steam.
