Balvenie DoubleWood 17 Year
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed March 1, 2018 (edited November 7, 2019)Fantastic nose, wonderful arrival and a mouth watering complex finish that phases from oak spice, vanilla and toffee. Just wish it was under $130 a bottle. -
Balvenie Doublewood 12 Year
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed March 1, 2018 (edited March 12, 2018)Picked up some bitter terpenes on the finish that I found very unpleasant. Probably a bad cask, it happens. At $60 a bottle... lots of other choices -
For a $30 blend, non chill filtered and 50% ABV... very pleasantly surprised. Update- On my 3rd bottle as it has now become my go to blend. Not that it means much to most of us but it just won Best Blended Scotch NAS at the 2018 SF Spirit Awards. Hats off to Master Blender Kirsteen Campbell, very well done.

Kavalan Solist Amontillado Single Cask Strength
Single Malt — Taiwan
Reviewed March 1, 2018 (edited November 13, 2022)Sampled this along with Kavalan’s other top shelf offerings during a Distillery tour. Stand out favorite. Nose is nutty and toffee with a hint of oak, the arrival delivers all of that plus caramels and spice. Finish is the arrival which slowly tapers into a soft nutty aftertaste. 93/100 -
Glen Garioch 12 Year
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed March 1, 2018 (edited December 5, 2019)Wonderful nose, with a spice I cannot place.(Finally placed it, its Propolis otherwise known as Bee Glue, sold in Asia as a herbal remedy) Toffee and malt sugar on the arrival, wonderful mouth feel and a lovely nutmeg, cardamom creme brûlée finish. Very much an after dinner Malt. A true crowd pleaser.
