High West Campfire (Discontinued)
Blended American Whiskey — (bottled in Utah), Multiple Countries
Reviewed July 15, 2022 (edited October 14, 2022)Wanted to like this more. Nope. Trying to do too much with 71% corn, peat, smoke. Sounds good on paper but doesn’t work. -
Glen Scotia 15 Year
Single Malt — Campbeltown, Scotland
Reviewed July 15, 2022 (edited September 24, 2022)Nose: Oak, burnt malt, pome fruit, lemon, acidic fruit but not too citrusy. Palate: Spice, some peat, apples, toasted bread, almost some vegetal flavors like a bell pepper. Vanilla and hints of chocolate. Finish: Peat lingers with some chocolate. The spice bounces around the mouth some too. Saltiness lingers too which is lovely. Overall, the nose is what intrigues me the most on this dram. I hate to say I expected more after dipping my toes in the Springbank 10, and perhaps my judgement is clouded as I expected more industrial funk and didn’t judge it on its own. It’s certainly not a boring pour, but I did expect more pizazz on the palate. Perhaps flavors will emerge with a second or third pour over time. -
Bit of a roller coaster. Nose starts off with tropical fruits along with some astringency and of course the peat. Taste is sweet, rich, smoky, and peaty. There’s a tannin feeling as this coats the mouth and an almost (barely) bit of BBQ tanginess going on. The finish is shorter for a peaty offering and you’re left with a sweet toffee taste to chew on. Overall it’s good. It’s young and kind of has the feeling that it’s not quite sure what it is although the there’s a lot in it. It certainly does not lack in complexity.
