Amrut Peated Indian Single Malt Cask Strength
Single Malt — India
Reviewed August 7, 2022 (edited December 19, 2022)Muted and subtle compared to an islay but you could sip this thing on a hot summer day (as I am currently) and it doesn’t seem overwhelming and out of place. But simple and lightly peated (relatively). Light and straightforward! -
Nose: the description here nails the nose with sugar roasted nuts, vanilla, raisins, and caramel present. Palate: typical sweet bourbon profile with vanilla and caramel and oak. Wraps up quickly. Finish: seems like the entire dram is an exercise in getting you to the finish. The palate lingers only as long as it’s in your mouth and then you’re left with a finish. Not full bodied and feel that this whiskey tries to put a bow on the experience before we’re really even into the middle of it.

Blanton's Original Single Barrel
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed July 23, 2022 (edited October 23, 2024)I came into my tasting skeptical and wanted to dislike this because of the annoying hype that comes with the Kentucky hand grenade. Unfortunately, I quite liked it and was impressed by the uniqueness. Nose: Generally unimpressed with the nose. Light apple, tart, vanilla, oaky, sweetness. Palate: I know this is a Kentucky bourbon, but I’m transported to a spiced apple juice roadside stand in Wenatchee national forest in Washington state. There’s cherry, chocolatey orange, and a hint of vanilla, but the overwhelming feeling is a nicely spiced (and spiked) apple juice from the PNW. Mouthfeel is oily. Finish: some spice as expected, but gentle short. It’s not boring, but a shorter finish. I can see why folks like this and count me in that group. It’s a savory bourbon, and not overly sweet, so my scotch loving heart can connect with this. -
Nose is buttered toast, a pine/evergreen hint, oak. Fairly muted actually. Palate is nuts, maraschino cherries, candy corn, caramel, bitterness at the back of the tongue, heat from the ABV, some vanilla. Mouthfeel is maple syrupy. Finish is long and slightly numbing. In a blind tasting I’d peg this as barrel proof from the numbing sensation and not the ethanol taste. Overall experience is a sweet nutty flavor for me. Not overly complex, but certainly not boring.
