Very fruity nose, almost like plum wine. On the palate, it has a mildly sweet flavor with not as much fruitiness as you would expect from the nose. The finish is medium to long. The taste is not as strong as you would expect which in this case is a good thing as it would be a major “sherry bomb”. It’s also one the few whiskeys that pairs well with food, bonus!

I ended up liking this more than I thought I would. I typically don’t enjoy the high peat Islay Scotches but this was a kinder/gentler peat smoke only present on the long finish mixed in with some dark chocolate. The nose was sweet with some spice/vanilla. The palate with an initial sweetness followed by some nice spice notes then some peat smoke but again quite mild as compared to a Laguvulin. This scotch seems to have it all. The ABV was respectable 46.3% which was slightly higher than I would have liked for this particular concoction. I can’t wait to try the 25 which should add some smoothness and complexity to an already good drink.

Stagg Jr Barrel Proof Bourbon Batch 1
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed March 27, 2018 (edited September 22, 2023)This would be an outstanding bourbon if the finish was as good as the initial flavor. TIP: let it sit out for about half hour. Much of the alcohol flavor and smell dissipates and you are left with a much sweeter initial taste that is amazing. Again, the finish is long but the flavor is somewhat lacking in the aftertaste IMO. Adding water mutes the flavors a bit. I’d rather leave it out than adding water. Would love a chance to compare this with the big daddy. -
Very nice but a bit hot. Nose has a bit of nuttiness to me with vanilla and spice. On the palate, mutual sweet vanilla flavor followed by spice then a oakey finish. There’s definitely some heat at the end as well. Adding water seems to make it sweeter without affecting the heat. Really like the taste. The finish is long.

Balvenie Portwood 21 Year
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed March 12, 2018 (edited August 1, 2018)Really wanted to like this but I think this is one you either like or hate. The nose is pleasing with vanilla, carmel, with hints of floral notes. The taste is entirely different. It has a strong floral/herb mid palate with a slightly smokey/oakey finish. A few drops of water did improve the nose and palate but still pretty disappointing in my opinion especially for the price point. It is smooth as advertised but the disconnect between the nose and palate was hard to overcome. -
Yellowstone Select Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed March 10, 2018 (edited June 8, 2018)A decent nose but lackluster flavor profile. This might be a good one for a beginner. I’d be curious to see what the barrel proof version of this tastes like. -
Blanton's Straight From the Barrel
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed March 10, 2018 (edited May 20, 2020)From the nose to finish, this one is spectacular. Definitely not for the novice. If you have been appreciating the taste of bourbon for awhile, this is a must try. I have always loved the single barrel version as my go to drink. This concoction takes it to another level. The best I’ve tasted so far. Incredible flavor. -
Mic Drop 8 Year Straight Bourbon Whiskey
Bourbon — Indiana, USA
Reviewed March 10, 2018 (edited May 20, 2020)Awesome “bourbon”! Great nose of vanilla, butterscotch, carmel with a hint of spice. Tastes as good as it smells with a complex flavor profile and a moderate to long finish. One of my favorites. Too bad it’s limited production. Once it’s gone, it’s gone for good. If u can find a bottle, get it. Well worth the $100 price tag.
