This was a neck pour review. The nose was nothing special-the usual suspects. The palate was initially very promising delivering a great flavor punch with vanilla, caramel, sweetness, and spice followed by fruit flavours in the mid-palate. The finish, however, was disappointing. The flavours dissipate rather quickly with a slight drying quality. I'm a big fan of the finish in whiskies. This does not do it for me. Definitely not worthy of whiskey of the year award by Whiskey Advocate. Will post a follow-up after it opens up a bit if it gets any better.

Don't let the cheap presentation fool you. On the nose, it lets you know it's 130+ proof but also has sweet/spicy aromas as well. Initial palate is hot and spicy followed by a flavor bomb reminiscent of ECBP but a rye version. Medium to long finish. It does not disappoint. Paid a little over $70 with tax and well worth it. I had this back to back with the Rabbit Hole boxergrail Founder's edition. While that one was more refined, rich, balanced, "smooth", the Alberta packed more heat and a flavour punch. Very different experiences but both very enjoyable.

Rabbit Hole Founder's Collection Boxergrail Rye Whiskey
Rye — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed December 21, 2020 (edited December 29, 2022)This is the BEST rye that I have ever tried! The nose is rich and sweet. There is very little alcohol sting for the proof. The best parts are the palate and finish. Sweet with surprisingly balanced rye spice notes. Great mouth feel with a pleasant oil-lyness. Rich with great balance. The finish is long, lingering with a slow taper. Perfect proof. Everything about it is so well done. $195 but we'll worth it compared to other premium ryes of this caliber. Would definitely get again at this price. Please go pick one up before the news gets out and the prices go up! Well done Rabbit Hole. Looking forward to Future Founder's collection releases. -
Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Bourbon Batch C918
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed May 14, 2020 (edited September 22, 2023)This is a delayed review. When I first opened this bottle, it was hot and spicy and not very flavorful. The finish was not great either. I had forgotten about it as I had other better drams to drink. After about a year I went back to it because everyone thought ECBF was so good. Did I miss something? Wow, did it ever open up into one of the best bourbons I've ever tasted. The nose was pleasant but not great. The plate however gave me a burst of flavour that I could not wrap my head around. Sweet, spicy, rich, viscous. It was intense! The finish was long and chewy-so different than the first tasting. What a bargain compared to other high proofs out there. -
Got the 750ml for ~$60. Initial nose was muted but the palate was nice with some fruity sweetness and a hint of smoke at the finish. After letting it open up just a few days, the nose was much sweeter and richer as was the palate with more complexity than the initial tasting. Seems like this is a blend of younger whiskeys but is very enjoyable at the "barrel proof". Would definitely buy again at this price.

Macallan Edition No. 2
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed April 17, 2020 (edited November 29, 2022)It’s good. Nice complex sherry notes. Smooth. Fruity. -
I think of a Japanese Johnny Walker when I taste this. Nice, sweet almost a light bourbonesque nose, clean palate that's light and refreshing with a hint of smoke. Fruity/spicy. Medium finish. This is not bad for the money. Was not expecting much when I got it as a X mas gift based on color and price. A good daily sipper.

Belle Meade Single Barrel Bourbon 10 Year
Bourbon — Tennessee, USA
Reviewed April 18, 2018 (edited November 30, 2020)This is better than I thought it would be for the price. Sweet and spicy pretty much sums it up. Medium to long finish. Very pleasant drink without too much spice like an Old Forrester 1920. Nice sipper with some heat at the end but just enough without being too intense. Well worth a grab off the shelf! -
This is a very spicy drink. Hits you on the lips after you take a sip as well as your whole mouth. There is an equal balance of vanilla/oak/leather/tobacco. Medium finish with a late burn down the gullet. Not for everyone but definitely different than the usual high rye bourbon. A little too spicy for me.
