Nose Medicinal first, maybe adhesive bandages. As my nose adjusts,I start to get a smoked honey character as well as some floral notes Palate Peat initially, but just like the nose, some sweetness follows. Cloves, baking spices and some dried fruit. Vanilla. Finish Mossy bitterness and damp oak transitioning into a bitter spiciness on the posterior palate. Medium length. The bitter/sweet complex of this whisky seems to translate through the different components of this scotch. This is a good go to value Islay scotch for someone who doesn't want a faceful of peat. Don't get me wrong though, there's no mistaking this as an Islay, which was proven by my four year old saying "Daddy why does your breath stink?"!

Michter's US*1 Kentucky Straight Rye
Rye — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed May 2, 2020 (edited October 3, 2020)Nice rich color out of the bottle Nose Very full and rich. Rye spice forefront. Baked cinnamon pear and vanilla sweetness. On returning to it, I get some sour cherries and caramel as well. Black pepper. Palate Oak tannins and spice on the hard palate. Extra dark chocolate and some bitter cherry flavor. The rye comes through nicely. The spice mellows over consecutive sips but maintains a constant presence. As this occurs, a subtle sweetness takes hold. Finish Long and full. Residual tannins and dark chocolate bitterness at the back of my tongue, lasting well into the next sip. A fantastic buy in my mind. One of my favorite ryes to sip. I am a fan of most of Michter's offerings!95.0 CAD per Bottle -
Angel's Envy Bourbon Finished in Port Wine Barrels
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed May 1, 2020 (edited October 2, 2020)Nose Rich, vanilla, Cherry and dried fruit. Oak and a sweet astringency. Palate Thinner than anticipated on the first sip, although following tastes seem to improve in this area. I'm having difficulty picking out individual notes, but the overall feeling is pleasant. I'm getting some raisin and quite prominent oak. Not as much wine/port flavour as I would expect, which isn't a bad thing. Finish Medium length. Port flavour comes through in the finish. Residual caramelized bitterness in the back of the throat. Tannins presumably from the port cask are present but not overpowering, and, to be honest, not as forefront as I would have expected. Overall a very enjoyable drink -
Kirkland 16 Year Highland Single Malt Bourbon Cask Matured
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed April 11, 2020 (edited October 2, 2020)Nose Strong cereal notes, earthy and slightly pungent. A little bit of anise. Palate Initial hit of sweetness, immediately replaced by a grainy bitterness, but with a hint of honey. Some leather and heather present. Finish Somewhat lengthy, but bitter. Transitions into a subtle malty characteristic that hangs around the back of the hard palate. Overall, a good price for a 16 year single malt scotch but my preference would be to put that same dollar amount into another style of whisky, or just spend more on a different single malt. -
Nose: Rye spice first, fresh baked bread with a caramel or vanilla glaze. Toasted almonds. Palate: A hit of unique grainy rye flavor first. Oily mouthfeel. Less sweet than typical Canadian whiskies. Well balanced oak. Spice and slight bitterness forefront, masking a subtle sweetness that balances this drink out. This background sweetness and vanilla preserves it's spot on the periphery of the Canadian whisky flavour profile to me. Despite this, the rye spice shines and maintains the spotlight. Finish Full and spicy. Residual flavors lingering on the soft palate. Bitter coffee or dark chocolate. Lingering oak. This was my last ounce from this bottle and I wish I had spent this time with it sooner! Very interesting in its category and well worth exploring for its price point. I will be replacing this bottle at my earliest convenience!40.0 CAD per Bottle

Westland Single Cask Release 2549
Single Malt — Washington , USA
Reviewed March 29, 2020 (edited March 30, 2020)All notes made after diluting from 60% bottling strength Very pale in colour, especially after adding water to dilute to approximately 40% Nose Orchard fruits like apples and pears, vanilla and spice. Honey, and cinnamon raisin oatmeal Palate Initial sweetness, immediately followed by an opposing bitterness. Almost reminiscent of Irish whisky flavors. Malty fullness spreading towards the back of the mouth, and the sides of the tongue. Spice is very forefront Finish Malty and some lingering oak towards the back of the mouth I'm having trouble deciding on a summary of this one because I'm not getting a wide range of flavors and not a very rich presence overall. Enjoyable nonetheless and the experience of filling it from the barrel definitely added to it!120.0 USD per Bottle -
Nose: Vanilla, caramel, toasted coconut and a hint of pear. Brown sugar and a hint of cinnamon buns. Palate: Milder than anticipated at first, growing into a fuller flavor. Somewhat thin feeling in the mouth until the full flavor kicks in. Very smooth and easy to drink. Oak and dried fruit present up front transitioning into dark chocolate and vanilla notes Finish: Expanding alcohol and flavor sensation. Lingering vanilla and cocoa Overall, well balanced and easy drinking. Made my wife's Hallmark movie far more enjoyable!

Heaven's Door Double Barrel Whiskey
Blended American Whiskey — Tennessee, USA
Reviewed March 21, 2020 (edited November 5, 2020)Nose - heavy oak, rich, smells very full flavored - Hard to not taste it yet... High alcohol is evident. Caramel and vanilla. A bit of water opens up notes of apple or pear Palate - full rich beginning. Flavor hits the entire mouth. Well balanced oak. Dry tannins. Even with water, heavy oak still comes through. Nice spices and not too sweet. Not knowing the mashbill when tasting, possibly high rye? I can imagine this makes a fantastic cocktail. Finish - lingering tingling on the sides of my tongue and a dryness on the palate. Long and lingering oak Really delicious whisky and it would be one to grab when you can't decide which bottle you want. Not disappointed with having purchased this bottle not having tried it before! -
Century Reserve 21 Year Canadian Whisky
Canadian — Alberta, Canada
Reviewed March 18, 2020 (edited August 4, 2022)Nose: Caramel popcorn but also movie theatre butter which don't seem like they should go together well, but here it seems natural. Bread pudding with vanilla ice cream and pralined nuts. Palate: More popcorn - I should be watching a movie right now! Full flavor, very smooth. Transitions into a Maple syrup finish Finish: Long and sweet, Maple syrup, minimal tannin or oak Very nice Canadian whisky. Would be a perfect movie-watching whisky, or a nice dessert finish to the night. -
Nose Spicy rye grain and cinnamon hearts. Cereal notes, vanilla and oak. Burnt toffee Palate Very forward with rye spice with a moderate alcohol burn, but very pleasant and satisfying. A very nice tannin sensation and tingle on the sides of the tongue, with some caramel and brown sugar adding to the background. Finish Lingering spice and cinnamon fading into a subtle sweetness. Lasting well until my next sip. A fantastic rye if you can find a bottle. Great to sip and a fantastic old fashioned base.
