Benchmark Bonded Bourbon (100 Proof)
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed May 19, 2022 (edited February 6, 2023)Sweet cherries, oak and leather on the nose. Vanilla on the palate. Powerful smoke early on the finish and more sweetness. A very drinkable bourbon at an absurd value. -
distilled spring 2017 barrel #2618... Rye and baking spices in the nose plus vanilla. Oily mouthfeel with leather, oak, and maybe caramel on the palate. Fairly short finish with spices, oak and a really mild burn at the end. This bottle weighs in at 106 proof though you don't taste much of the alcohol or get a burn. This, to me is what a rye should be.

pine, rye, vanilla, and light cherry on the nose plus maybe baking spices. Leather and vanilla on the palate The rye hits hard on a medium long finish. The bottle states 3 years age but this sipps like a much younger bottle. For me this falls well short of the price point in terms of flavor and complexity. There are many superior ryes that are more inexpensive

some fruity notes, maybe berries on the nose with heavy alcohol underneath. Pine and earthen flavors on the palate plus maple, rather oily Hearty burn early on the finish due to the proof followed by a medium long aftertaste with some spiciness. I'm not sure I got the balance that I read about in another review, the proof punch at the beginning of the finish throws me. Between the two I much prefer Noah's brother, Rowan Creek. Overall this is pretty good but my opinion is tinged by a steep price tag.

Sagamore Spirit 'Sagamore Reserve' Double Oak Rye (2017 Limited Edition Release)
Rye — (bottled in) Maryland, USA
Reviewed March 24, 2022 (edited July 3, 2022)Vanilla, pine and hearty oak on the nose (for obvious reasons). Underlying floral aromas and cinnamon. Rich oily mouthfeel, some spice and oak on the palate but quite understated & smooth at this point. Some burn early on the finish plus rye spiciness on the finish which sticks around for a bit but doesn't overstay it's welcome. Nicely balanced with the rye kick on the back end. Picked this up in Louisville and have had it open for a bit before realizing how special this bottle is through research for this taste. -
vanilla and some ethonol on the nose also a little banana peel and maybe caramel. Very light mouthfeel little rye and some oak, more vanilla. Very little complexity on the palate. Early burn on the finish that receds and still more vanilla. Decent pour just slightly above average, not rushing out to bur again. I'll be honest the branding pulled me in; it's a fun bottle and a fun lable but a 2 year age statement is rough and when even the label says "best in a cocktail" that's a tough look.

Old Elk Blended Straight Bourbon
Bourbon — (bottled in) Colorado, USA
Reviewed March 22, 2022 (edited April 5, 2022)sweet cherry on the nose plus oak and pine. Green apple on the palate plus more cherry and vanilla. A nice smooth mouthfeel A lot of sweetness on a lengthy finish very. little spice and no burn thanks to the low proof. Pretty smooth and accessable pour but not overly complex or challenging. A very average bourbon overall though an interesting effort with the high barley and slow proofing. Unfortunately the price point does not reflect the quality much at all. -
Yellowstone Select Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed March 22, 2022 (edited April 22, 2022)sweet candy or apricot on the nose, delightful rich aromas, slight caramel and very light pine. Lots of levels on the nose. Spice, oak and light smoke on the palate. Rich mouth feel but not oily. Fruity flavors come through in later sips Spicy finish but no burn, short finish that doesn't stick around too long. A solid pour though not outstanding, would get again at a decent price point but there are definitely better bottles out there in the $50 range.
