Sipping a bit listening to a band across the canal at the Rod 'n Reel in Chesapeake Beach. A light and fruity nose with hints of vanilla and brown sugar. Soft palate that arrives sweet. Brown sugar profile carries over. Walnuts or pecan notes arrive but leave as quickly as they came. The palate is left with a small amount of oak, white pepper and traces of sugar and leaves the mouth slightly bitter. Overall, an easy, simple blend. Straight forward, safe and unadventurous. Mellow Corn Bottled in Bond Whiskey
Corn — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed August 13, 2015 (edited August 18, 2017)The green and yellow bottle immediately brought to mind the Green Bay Packers. On nosing, Elmer's glue and banana are dominant, however, not very strong. Black pepper, oak and creamy butter make their way onto the palate. Finishes with hints of corn and oak. This is a bit unique and slightly funky. Not as bold as the Packers. More like a college frat house football team: not exciting stuff but definitely cheap ($13). [78/100][Tasted: 8/12/15] -
Rittenhouse Rye Bottled in Bond
Rye — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed August 13, 2015 (edited October 31, 2018)Faint notes of nutmeg, cloves and molasses. Each of the aromas become heightened as the dram breathes and the rye notes arrive. A light body delivers a black pepper spice. Brown sugar flashes in and out, sweetening the palate. Upon the finish, the rye tones begin to dominate the palate and ultimately leaves the mouth full of black pepper, rye, cinnamon and oak. While in Nashville, I thoroughly enjoyed this in an Old Fashioned at Kayne Prime Steakhouse and will use this as my cocktail rye of choice. I am finding myself enjoying the Whiskeys of the Heaven Hill family and their price point; high quality delivered and an extremely fair price. [$25][88/100][Opened: 10/4/15] -
Henry McKenna 10 Year Bottled in Bond Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed August 13, 2015 (edited August 14, 2015)Orange, toffee are the primary aromas. The palate discerns pineapple, cinnamon and black pepper. Finishes with a hint of mint, like toothpaste. Decent, probably, for a mixer, however, I was not overly impressed. [81/100][Tasted: 8/12/15] -
Larceny Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed August 13, 2015 (edited November 12, 2016)The nose is light and almost indistinct. When it opens up, banana bread and vanilla/toffee can eventually be drawn. The palate, as I seem to realizing with the Heaven Hill line, is smooth and soft. The wheat can be found with a sweet arrival. A nice strong oak finish fading with cinnamon. Balblair 2002 1st Release
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed July 12, 2015 (edited July 7, 2019)As another Sunday closes out on this warm summer evening (and now bitter cold winter), I thought it would be a good time to open this bottle while listening to some country music by the pool/fire. Soft, fruity nose of ripe, sweet pears with hints of apricot, honey, lemon citrus with and floral notes. A sweet potpourri of aromas. As it arrives, you are delivered,on a soft palate, an initial wave of brown sugar. As the brown sugar diminishes, white pepper and a skosh of cherry are present. It finally departs leaving the mouth with a quick burn giving way to spice and lemon zest. Over time, this whisky becomes wonderfully sweeter; as if a teaspoon of sugar was stirred in. A beautiful, soft dram that is made for a warm and lazy summer/cold winter, with all the elements of a summers day. Wonderful. [89/100][Opened: 7/12/15; 2/14/16] -
I.W. Harper 15 Year Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed July 10, 2015 (edited September 18, 2015)On first nosing, I sensed a rubber-cement or glue adhesive quality and very little else. On arrival, pepper, rye with the corn sweetness. The palate was rewarded where the nose was not. Two different sensations that confuse. As you continue, the soft texture with the sweetness and rye finishes slightly oaky. Overall, a decent whiskey. However, my sampling was small and need to revisit. I am unsure if it is worthy of an $80+ price tag, but definitely worth a try. [87/100][Tasted: 7/10/15].
