Hampden Estate 2011 LFCH Trelawny Endemic Bird Series Becard Single Cask #299
Aged Rum — Jamaica
Reviewed May 1, 2023Last of my Hampdens, a single cask LFCH. Their second lowest-ester marque. I get some butterscotch and lemon cookie on the nose, with more butterscotch and some banana on the palate, with a hint of wintergreen and a lightly citrusy finish. It's pretty nice, but definitely not worth the asking price, considering I'd rank it right along with Great House. -
Hampden Estate Great House (Distillery Edition 2022)
Aged Rum — Jamaica
Reviewed May 1, 2023 (edited May 27, 2023)Dessert-like aroma featuring caramel and custard, with maybe a hint of strawberry. Not as fruity as the 2021 and less industrial than the 2020. On the palate I get some fudge, banana, a hint of espresso, with a lightly bitter and herbal finish. I think I like the 2020 a touch more, but overall another outstanding Hampden. -
Hampden Estate Great House (Distillery Edition 2021)
Aged Rum — Jamaica
Reviewed April 28, 2023 (edited April 29, 2023)Compared to the 2020, this is less industrial and has more of a light barnyard funk, with more fruity notes. There's some spice in there, with the typical brown sugar, and a little custard. Compared to other Hampdens, this is probably a little more up the alley of those who like whiskey and Bajan rums, although it still manages to be distinctly Jamaican. -
Hampden Estate Great House (Distillery Edition 2020)
Aged Rum — Jamaica
Reviewed April 28, 2023 (edited April 29, 2023)First smell of this when I opened the bottle was "tire shop". Industrial funk all over, but as it opens up, nutmeg and vanilla start to come out. The palate started out funky, with something I can only describe as "probably mango peel", but as it airs, I get some chocolate, cola, tiramasu, and more tire. Might be my favorite Great House, but I need to do a Round Robin tournament to be sure. -
Aromas of banana, molasses, with a funk that leans a bit towards the industrial side. Rich fruity flavor with some funk, maple, slightly vegetal, with some iodine in there, maybe even a little bit of dark fruit. Close to the quality of Great House at a fraction of the price. Unfortunately, this recipe has been discontinued in favor of a 4 year age stated single-marque (labeled "HLCF Classic"), so I bought a backup. Get it while you can.

Nose is fruity with a little brown sugar. Decidedly less hogo than other Hampden offerings, on account of the lower ester marque, but it's still quite funky compared to most molasses rums. I get some brown sugar, banana, and a little cream on the palate. Solid standard bottling, and a good intro to Hampden.

A little light bodied, typical Hampden funk with a little bit of caramel coming through on the nose and the palate (presumably from the bourbon cask). Has sort of a damp/mildew thing going on in the finish (in a good way). Ultimately I think the proof works well here, would love to see a similar offering with one of the high ester marques.

Think it's time to review some Hampden offerings. This is the distillery that made me realize rum is exciting. This is hogo all over, fruity nose heavy with funk. Banana peel, burnt rubber, a little heat, and a slightly sour note I can't place. There's a little salinity on the finish. Overall, an excellent offering in the "white overproof" category

Tamdhu Batch Strength Batch 002
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed April 23, 2023 (edited April 25, 2023)Plum, leather, hint of smoke. Some grain coming through, and it's quite hot, which leads me to believe it's mostly young spirit in there. It's interesting enough that it makes me want to explore this distillery more, but this particular offering has some flaws.
