Tastes

Decided to line up my collection of 5 Sentidos mezcals, as I just bought a new one to replace one that's almost empty. This one is the Sierra Negra, which takes up to 15 years to mature, and was roasted with encino oak and acacia leaves. I detect aromas of grass and wet leaves, and maybe some melon. Perhaps it smells a little like the desert after rain on account of the acacia. The palate is slightly sweet, with some melon, parsley, and a more vegetal and peppery finish.

Big butterscotch, caramel, and vanilla flavors, basically flan in a glass. Very little agave. They claim this is additive free, but it's a little hard to believe. It's tasty, but probably not for someone who wants an agave forward tequila.

Roasted agave, chocolate, vanilla, caramel, with a little bit of pepper on the back. Surprisingly good for a brand that doesn't seem to get any attention, and proof that additives aren't needed to make a good dessert tequila.

Sweet tropical fruit aroma, dark fruit, earthy palate, smoke doesn't really arrive until the finish.

Aged 22 months. Funky nose, some ethanol. Palate is a little herbal, earthy, hints of wintergreen, medium finish where cooked agave comes through a little. Really interesting stuff, apparently only available in Tucson as of now.
