Clairin Le Rocher
Rhum Agricole Blanc — Pignon, Haiti
Reviewed March 19, 2023 (edited January 4, 2024)First foray into clairin a few years ago. When I first cracked the bottle, I thought it was quite grassy, but either some oxidation or a palate that is now more experienced with cane rum has changed that. I do get some herbal flavors, mint, some grass, and esters that are more reminiscent of mango or papaya than the overripe banana more typical to Jamican funk. The aroma is pervasive and hits as soon as the bottle is open. -
Ben Nevis 1996 24 year (Single Malts of Scotland)
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed March 17, 2023 (edited March 22, 2023)Initially I'm met with an aroma of apple with some spice and maybe a touch of caramel; I'm reminded of apple pie. Fruity palate, medium body, the wood is nicely integrated and doesn't steal the show. Some floral notes emerge on the finish. I've read Ben Nevis went under a bit of an overhaul which affected 1996 onward, so this is the oldest one can get under the "new regime". This isn't an in-your-face dram but I find it immensely enjoyable, and would love to try some other BNs from this year, given some are said to be even better.300.0 USD per Bottle -
Adelphi Ben Nevis 5 years old (cask #10712)
Single Malt — Highland, Scotland
Reviewed March 17, 2023 (edited March 22, 2023)Rich sherry, plum, thick mouthfeel, bread. Nice long finish. Slight sulfur, but not enough to hurt. The youth is apparent, and the sherry mostly hides the distillate, but it's a nice tasting dram nonetheless. -
Long Pond 2005 15 Year Cask #21VRW (ImpEx Collection)
Aged Rum — Jamaica
Reviewed March 14, 2023 (edited March 22, 2023)Light banana, marmalade, brown sugar. Not a lot of esters at first, but a funkier finish featuring a little bit of banana peel and tropical fruits like papaya. It's interesting enough that I'd like to try more from this distillery. -
Auchentoshan Three Wood
Single Malt — Lowlands, Scotland
Reviewed March 11, 2023 (edited March 22, 2023)Sherry dominates, dark fruit, with a slightly woody, bitter note on the finish. Medium body, ethanol isn't extremely well integrated. I don't love it, but it's not bad at the $85 or so/bottle price point. -
Batch 2. Hot, ethanol on the nose. Had to let it air out to really get the green apple on the nose, but still needed a little water to calm down the palate. After that, I get caramel apple with a smoky and still slightly hot finish. I think this is the first Kilchoman I didn't particularly care for.27.0 USD per Pour

Springbank 10 Year Old PX Sherry Wood (2022 Edition)
Single Malt — Campbeltown, Scotland
Reviewed March 10, 2023 (edited March 22, 2023)Dark fruit, oily, a little smoke, funk is present. Ethanol presence keeps it from being outstanding. Can't decide whether I like it more than the Local Barley, but presumably this isn't quite as overpriced.25.0 USD per Pour -
Longrow Red 11 Year Tawny Port Cask Matured
Single Malt — Scotland
Reviewed March 10, 2023 (edited March 22, 2023)Full-bodied and rich, port is front and center, but blend nicely with the smoke. Much better than the most recent Red I've had (Malbec), so I guess it's a return to form.30.0 USD per Pour -
Bruichladdich Black Art 1990 04.1 Edition 23 Year
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland
Reviewed March 7, 2023 (edited March 22, 2023)Not sure what inspired me to have a pour of this on a Tuesday evening, maybe I just wanted to keep having great whiskey... anyways, the first sip was like biting into a warm caramel apple, which with time evolves into cocoa and red wine. Thick and rich, aromas of bananas foster. Not sure what I'll do when this bottle is finally empty, one of the best things I've tasted...350.0 USD per Bottle
