I agree with @PBMichiganWolverine - if tasted blind, I'm not sure I wouldn't have thought it was a mocha liqueur. A little of the rye spice seems to be there on the finish, but very chocolaty. Very interesting and a great value at $34. Update: after subsequent tastings, my rating has been revised down. Too sweet and chocolaty to be something I have a regular interest in. Have tried adding a little of this to a more conventional rye, but similar to adding peated whiskey to unpeated, it takes very little to significantly change the taste. Still worth checking out for the novelty, but I won't be replacing this when I finish.34.0 USD per Bottle

The Burning Chair Bourbon
Bourbon — (bottled in) California, USA
Reviewed May 16, 2021 (edited September 26, 2023)Birthday present bottle. Red wine on the nose and prominent on the palate, with a pretty standard bourbon finish. No peanutty taste that I tend to dislike in many bourbons. I like this as a pleasant spin on bourbon. -
Whiskey Del Bac Dorado Private Barrel
American Single Malt — USA
Reviewed May 14, 2021 (edited April 25, 2022)First taste neat, I thought the mesquite smoke was too much. A little water dials it back. Rich caramel, cinnamon, sweet smoky burnt ends, mesquite smoke finish. Reminiscent of Balcones Brimstone, but better. Doesnt leave a sooty aftertaste like the Brimstone that I taste the next day.80.0 USD per BottleThe Well of OKC Wine & Spirits -
Larceny Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon

Reviewed May 12, 2021 (edited July 10, 2021)Average, forgettable - forgot this was among whiskies tasted last night. Probably fine for the price. -
GlenDronach Original 12 Year
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed May 11, 2021 (edited July 16, 2021)Whiskey night 3rd place. As a scotch fan, I was surprised that this fell behind a bourbon and a rye. I seem to prefer sherry finishes when combined with some peat. For whatever reason that combo works well for me, so an unpeated sherried scotch falls a little flat for my liking. Still good, but wasn't the star of the show as I'd expected. -
Old Forester 1920 Prohibition Style
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed May 11, 2021 (edited June 11, 2021)2nd place for me among whiskey night tastes. Hot with a punch of cherry on the finish. I like regular Old Forester for the price especially, and this is a clear upgrade, although I'm not sure it's worth more than twice the cost. -
Wilderness Trail Settlers Select Single Barrel Barrel Proof Rye
Rye — Kentucky , USA
Reviewed May 11, 2021 (edited October 12, 2022)Whiskey night tasting with friends - this was the winner among an assortment of various whiskeys across the gamut. Well balanced, good touch of rye spice, and the proof was nicely hidden. This particular barrel was 116 proof. -
Balcones Peated Texas Single Malt Whisky
American Single Malt — Texas, USA
Reviewed May 1, 2021 (edited January 7, 2023)Really great whiskey. All the things I love about Balcones, plus wonderful peat. It's not a peat bomb, but it's there, and it feels well-integrated into the experience, not just an afterthought or gimmick. First taste was neat and I found it to be quite hot. It takes a fair amount of water well without losing anything for me. I appreciate the high proof and that I can add some water to stretch it out a little, but I'd also like to see a lower proof, cheaper peated single malt (like Lineage is to the regular single malt). Second pour gets this an upgrade to 5*. This stuff is legit. Update #2: dern near whiskey perfection. Update #3: not even halfway through the first bottle, I bought a second as I wasn't sure if I would see it again in store.80.0 USD per Bottle
