A dull ride in a leaky oak rowboat. Finishes very watery. 40% Nose: Fresh sweet woody notes Light spice, nutmeg Sweet barley Dry grass Vanilla Someone smoking way off in the distance Arrival: Walnut Young fresh oak wood shavings Jelly belly’s toasted marshmallow flavour Development: Wood tannins Finish: More dry wood tannins Tiny whisper of menthol Watery finish Comments: With a drop of water (not much help) and a few minutes it starts off well but just falls out in the finish. It’s priced accordingly for its lazy finish. You pay for what you get. Good starter whiskey and a nice example of young oak flavour.

Glengoyne 21 Year
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed March 17, 2019 (edited December 11, 2020)Glengoyne 21: she is a gentle, sweet and very classy lady. The old rule applies here “A minute in the glass for each year in the cask” don’t rush this beauty if you want to get to know her. This is a great sherry bomb with less barrel spice than I expected. Tall stills give a cleanness at the expense of perhaps a little complexity. Honestly if this was cheaper I could drink a lot of this without noticing. Don’t go crazy on the water Nose: Dried stone fruit Salted plumb candy Raisins Little hint of champion ruby fresh tobacco Sherry preserved cherry Arrival: Dark honey Ripe Plumbs Black tea Hot rose water toffee Development: Gentle white pepper Vanilla Sherry cask woody...ness Finish: Rich and sweet Rose petal White tea notes linger -
Rollins Tennessee Whiskey
Tennessee Whiskey — Tennessee, USA
Reviewed March 14, 2019 (edited October 21, 2020)Take this one at face value.. it’s unfair to compare this to a $100+ bottle of bourbon it’s also unfair to compare it to good scotch. This can be compared to Jack Daniels. With this in mind we can say this is a good spirit in its class. If I had a choice out of this or JD, I would happily have this one. Tasting neat in a glen cairn. NOSE: Young and sweet Old oily vanilla pods Surface cleaner mock sweetness Unripe green apples in the background Iron metallic ARRIVAL: Caramel Vanilla Mouth drying DEVELOPMENT: Wood char and cinnamon More dry sappy wood note FINISH: Cinnamon drags out like you did the challenge A little front of palate Thai chilli heat Burned sugar I’m keen to try this in a whiskey sour. Cheers!50.0 AUD per Bottle -

Jameson Caskmates Stout Edition
Blended — Ireland
Reviewed February 25, 2019 (edited March 15, 2019)Absolutely fantastic intro whisky for a newcomer. It’s gentle and sweet with very little burn or spice to scare your friend off. For the experienced it might seem a bit weak-sauce but a fun experiment and great value for money. Nose: Lunchbox banana from an arms length away Milk chocolate Bright... creaming soda Vanilla Taste: Gentle stout influence with the young dark chocolate malt and dull mash hooping that appears on the breath out. Super gentle on the palate, no alcohol burn or barrel spice to start. Just sweet caramel and that brown banana again. Tiny hint of coriander (cilantro) and mock green apple. Finish: A little spice and black tea lingers for a short time and vanishes. -
Talisker 57º North
Single Malt — Islands, Scotland
Reviewed February 25, 2019 (edited February 28, 2020)Great one to choose if you have time to let it unfold. It’s very secretive (even with water). Give it time and it unwinds nicely. Nose: Salt and sweet malt Floral with some fresh mint Medicinal smoke and a little meaty smoke too. Everything comes at you at once instead of layers. A little pear cider after a rest Honey Taste: Dull malt Slightly clingy bbq smoke Numbing cloves fresh ginger sweet black tea Mustard seed and fresh green pepper Finish: The Spice and smoke elements hang on for a while with that oil of cloves remaining. If you have a tooth ache, you know what bottle to grab.136.0 AUD per Bottle -
Monkey Shoulder Blended Malt
Blended Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed February 25, 2019 (edited March 7, 2019)Great value for a simple speyside blended Nose: Marmalade Vanilla Caramel Fresh Lady finger Banana to start Over ripe banana bread to if you take some time. Sherbet Palate: Sparkling and bright Apple juice Nutmeg White pepper Black tea Finish There’s plenty to enjoy about monkey shoulders but like a pleasant dream it slips away once you are done. There’s a good malt sweetness with a smidge of teabag tannins for low-medium finish. Grasp at the memory by smelling the glass... or you can of course afford to pour another. -
