Shadow Ridge American Single Malt Whiskey
American Single Malt — San Diego, USA
Reviewed September 13, 2020Nose: Sweet tobacco curing in a barn (if you grew up in tobacco country you know the smell) Stewed fruits and baked bread. Palate: More of that tobacco but with more toffee notes with a nice maltiness to it too. Some woody flavors and leather also can be found. Finish: a nice dark chocolate with that sweet tobacco barn still powering through and I’m loving it. -
Russell's Reserve 10 Year Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed September 9, 2020 (edited April 2, 2021)Nose: Oak spice and vanilla come to mind right off the bat. Some leather and toast as it opens up a bit. Palate: More vanilla mixes with a caramel like sweetness. It develops into more of a pipe tobacco and cinnamon but subtly so. Finish: Still has everything from the palate but less sweetness allow the oak spice and cinnamon come forward. Leaving some chest warmth as you sip. Tastes like the definition of a bourbon -
Lone Elm Small Batch Texas Straight Wheat Whiskey
Wheat Whiskey — Texas, USA
Reviewed September 7, 2020 (edited May 4, 2022)Nose: Sweet and mellow, toasted bread and vanilla. Just a subtle hint of oak and cinnamon. Palate: Smooth. Starting out with vanilla and a nice nuttiness. Opens up to a nice dried cherry/raisin which is very apparent to me. Not super complex but extremely drinkable. Finish: The dried cherry/raisins, turns more to a chocolate covered raisin. With more vanilla and cinnamon bring out that Texas taste to it. -
Nose: Caramel candied green apple smoothed out by some vanilla notes and cooked grains. Palate: More caramel sweetness, the apple note is more of a cooked apple now and not nearly as prominent. Cooked mash, think of a nice fresh bowl of cooked oatmeal. Finish: Hints of brown sugar almost burnt like a crust of a creme brulee. That candied apple comes back to say goodbye.

Garrison Brothers Laguna Madre (2021 Release)
Bourbon — Texas, USA
Reviewed August 30, 2020 (edited April 16, 2021)Nose: Sweet, with hints cinnamon, makes me think of cinnamon brown sugar on toast. Tons of vanilla! Palate: A nice sweetness brings in the strong notes of vanilla and a creaminess that's really nice. Finish: The creaminess continues but now reminds me of a heavy cream with cinnamon sprinkled on top like a nice cup of hot chocolate. Oddly specific I know. -
Garrison Brothers Cowboy Bourbon (2018 Release)
Bourbon — Texas, USA
Reviewed August 30, 2020 (edited April 2, 2021)Nose: Sweet w/ hints of monkey bread, some spice but more like cooked cinnamon. Palate: Sweet caramel and vanilla with some bread-like qualities. A little nuttiness develops as more vanilla comes out. Finish: Cinnamon rolls, some pepper adds a little kick but is quickly tappers as the vanilla soothes the finish. -
Still Austin The Musician Straight Bourbon
Bourbon — Texas, USA
Reviewed August 29, 2020 (edited June 7, 2024)Nose: Young, still has the fresh grain smell but mellowed by the oak with a hint of vanilla and toasted coconut. The high rye content comes through with a little of what I call the ”dill pickle” smell of younger ryes. Palate: Pretty well balanced for being no older than two year and with the high rye content. Notes of caramel and vanilla battle with the black pepper spice. Not in a harsh way by any means. Finished: The caramel transforms more into a saltes caramel treat with some hints of a toffee like sweetness competing the the lingering zestiness of the black pepper. All in all not a bad whiskey at all and it gives me hope for the distillery in the years to come! -
Garrison Brothers Texas Straight Bourbon Whiskey (Single Barrel hand-selected by Master Distiller Donnis Todd and Caskers)
Bourbon — Texas, USA
Reviewed August 26, 2020Nose: Full. Equal parts sweet and spicy. Sweet like a molasses with some caramel and vanilla. Woody with a heat similar to the smells of a wood grill. Some cinnamon and hints of nuts too. Palate: Sweet and smooth with a molasses like thickness to the mouth feel. Some caramel and raisins come to mind before the spice comes back. Finish: The spice from the nose and mid-palate develops into more of a red pepper flake that mingles well with a natural honey. -
Horse Soldier Signature Small Batch Bourbon
Bourbon — Ohio, USA
Reviewed August 22, 2020 (edited January 21, 2021)Nose: Old hay barn, probably due to the soft red winter wheat it uses. Some vanilla and caramel too. Palate: A sweet nutty like caramel is what I notice most about this bourbon very smooth with just a hint of black pepper. Also a hint of a chocolate malt flavor that I really enjoy. Finish: medium length with a bit of that caramel and vanilla become a little burnt but not in a bad way. It adds a nice char smoke to it all as it fades off into the distance.
