Wild Turkey Master's Keep One
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed December 20, 2021 (edited July 29, 2022)NOSE Dried dark fruits, caramel, oak, leather, cinnamon, vanilla, marzipan with bits of chocolate and citrus peels. Good heck, this aroma. It’s rich and moves through the nose like velvet. PALATE Caramel corn, dried apples, oak, dark chocolate, hazelnuts, vanilla, cinnamon and leather with touches of citrus peel. I didn’t think the palate would beat the nose… but dang. I’m loving what’s happening here. FINISH Long -> Oak, caramel, vanilla, cinnamon fade out evenly and sweetly. -
NOSE Piney herbal spice, dark sweets, oak, dried dark and orchard fruits, roasted corn and vanilla with slight metallic and banana notes. Easy, balanced and enjoyable. Not a bad start. PALATE Piney herbal spice, woody oak, butterscotch, blackberry taffy, roasted corn, vanilla, dried apples and a lemony citrus pop with more hints of the metal and banana from the aroma. There is this slight, very light, crafty note that peeks in, but other than that it’s nice. FINISH Med-long -> Fruity and oaky with a slight butterscotch note on the fade.

NOSE Fruit, cereal grain sweet, oak, baking spice, vanilla, lemon heads, slight hoppy herbaceousness. This has to be the most unique Barrell Bourbon I’ve smelled yet. It’s not their typical oak-driven beast of whiskey, more light, herbal, fruity, candy sweet and almost floral. PALATE Dark candy sweetness, fruity sweetness, cereal grain sweetness, oak, caramel cupckes, vanilla, candied citrus and some earthy hay undertones. Like the aroma, this is unique and atypical for Barrell and I need a minute to really process this. FINISH Medium-long -> Candy and cereal sweetness and spice fades to oaky dark sweets.

Barrell Seagrass
Rye — (bottled in) Kentucky, Multiple Countries
Reviewed December 13, 2021 (edited November 28, 2022)NOSE Rye spice, dried fruit, oak, sweet alcohol, grapey sweetness, candy and dry cologne spice. With time, air and water, the apricot brandy notes really show and there’s a musky/cologne warmth that comes out. PALATE Rye spice, bergamot, dried fruit, oak, sweet alcohol, grapey sweetness, candy, dried apricots and touch of menthol and brown sugar. Weird, unique and super interesting. This might win the year for most intriguing rye delivery. FINISH Long -> Rye, oak and fruity sweetness disperse to a core of spiced apricot. -
Benriach Smoke Season
Single Malt — Speyside , Scotland
Reviewed December 10, 2021 (edited November 23, 2022)NOSE Smoke, orchard fruit, minerality (spirity), cinnamon pastry, malty and a touch of honey and baseball card bubblegum. One part spirity, one party smoky, one part sweet and one part nostalgic. Weird, but I dig what’s happening. PALATE Smoke, toffee, minerality, oak, honey graham, vanilla taffy and a bit of churro, wax and honied malty sweetness. Bolder smoky delivery with less of the “spirity” essence and subtle richness. FINISH Med-long -> Smoke, spice, toffee and dried fruit fade to a waxy smoked vanilla. -

Benriach Malting Season (First Edition)
Single Malt — Speyside , Scotland
Reviewed December 9, 2021 (edited April 7, 2022)NOSE Honied fruit, vanilla taffy, Banana Quik, malt and a touch spirity. Not a whole lot going on here, it comes through super light and airy. PALATE Hay-like malt, Banana Quik, honey, dried fruit, nuts and vanilla taffy notes with a touch of spice and wax. Heavier than the aroma but, again, quite light and airy. I’m just not getting a ton on the delivery and I have to really take my time. FINISH Medium -> Banana Quik, vanilla and wax fade to cinnamon-heavy spiced nuts.
