Kavalan Solist Oloroso Sherry Single Cask Strength
Single Malt — Taiwan
Reviewed March 3, 2018 (edited May 3, 2018)Oh wow… When I got this as a gift I couldn’t wait to get the first dram. And it was worth waiting. It is so very different then European and American whiskeys – it looks like a thick, greasy tar. Red-black and almost not transparent. The nose is extremely rich and aromatic. The taste – huge domination of sherry, plus herbs, chocolate, vanilla sugar and honey. Very reach, very oily and very creamy. And although I liked it I kept asking myself a question – is still a whisky or had it went so far away from the original tastes that it is some different kind of animal? -
Connemara Original Peated Single Malt
Single Malt — Ireland
Reviewed March 3, 2018 (edited May 9, 2018)This was not the first time I tried Connemara and I recalled eat as very – well – “non-Irish”. The shortest description of Connemara would be “Add peat to smooth Irish whiskey”. In terms of peat it is not even close to Laphroaig or Ardbeg, but the peat and smoke accents are very well composed with the smooth and sweet character of Irish whiskey. It is truly one of it’s kind but on the hand I wonder who is it for – peat lovers or Irish whiskey fans?
