For the same price range as Gold, there's no question which is better, spiced or not. It has a basic, vanilla-forward profile, with a nice balance of oak. Not like alcoholic charcoal, like the Gold. I wasn't expecting to enjoy this, but it was actually pretty pleasant. It's a bit sweet overall, but it actually mixes wonderfully with no surprises. It's an easy thing to keep stocked with how cheap it is. I think I still prefer my Captain Morgan 100 over this though, but this is not a bad selection.

Kraken Black Spiced Rum Original
Spiced Rum — Trinidad & Tobago
Reviewed May 14, 2017 (edited January 13, 2018)Mmm... this changed my mind about spiced rums. Dark, rich, sweet, and spicy; I get a taste of dark molasses, Dr. Pepper, burnt sugar, and oak. It's very dense, and at poured strength of 47%, the alcohol, spiciness, and sweetness are very pronounced. On ice is absolutely delicious. This is also wonderfully complex in a daiquri! Some of the spices shine through more, like nutmeg and a touch of clove. At $15 this is practically a steal, beats the ever loving hell out of anything else at the price point. -
It's hard to pick out any one flavor at once, but I do agree completely with the tasting notes- cinnamon, black cherry, and maybe some caramel with a serious bitter finish. Oh, and a mouthful of alcoholic fire. It's tough to enjoy, but there's some interesting flavors happening here. Shame it didn't turn out well. It does mix okay, with a nice subtle cinnamon taste, but the bitterness still shines.

Sauza Tequila Gold
Tequila Mixto — Tequila Valley, Jalisco, Mexico
Reviewed May 14, 2017 (edited May 15, 2017)If you're buying this, just be aware it's essentially cuervo gold. This ruined me on tequila for a long time. -
Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye
Canadian — Manitoba, Canada
Reviewed May 13, 2017 (edited June 24, 2017)This is actually not too bad. I expected worse, from a lower-shelf crown offering, but was pleasantly surprised. At its heart, it's rich and spicy, though the flavors are hard to distinguish- I imagine it's due to the blend's age and price point. But, the nose is sweet and reminds me of baked apples and cinnamon, there's brown sugar, oak and rye on the palate, and a strange finish that morphs from the spicy rye to a more fruity, plum-ey taste with a sweet mintiness that lingers for quite a while. Was more of a 3 when I opened it but enjoyed it more as I drank it. -
100 proof or not, it hits your tongue like brimstone. The papery oak spice might be an enjoyable characteristic if the overwhelming corn sweetness wasn't there. It literally does taste like a higher proof beam. Something about it feels more bearable than white label, but this should only be used for shots if you're tryna get crunk. To which, it succeeds.
