Decent rum, but a bit heavy on the oak. So tannic that it teeters on acerbic. The tannins lessen as it sits, so I'd recommend pouring a glass, and letting it sit for a while. Do that, and you are rewarded with vanilla, butterscotch, and baking spices. The finish is pleasantly fruity, something like pears and cherries. I like this rum, but I think it would benefit from a secondary aging in a less active cask. I'd also be interested to see what this rum is like at cask strength.

Corralejo Silver Tequila
Tequila Blanco — Guanajuato, Mexico
Reviewed October 3, 2016 (edited August 22, 2022)Bought this on a fishing trip to Lake Whitney, so I could have something to end the day without draining my whiskey stocks (too much). I tend to prefer aged spirits, but this really hits the spot. No complicated tasting notes. It's slightly sweet, a bit peppery, viscous, and just plain good. I haven't had a disappointing Corralejo product yet. The best is the reposado, but this is a strong contender. Definitely my favorite clear spirit. -

Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed September 14, 2016 (edited October 17, 2016)This is an interesting scotch. Without water, the nose is a bit closed. Fruity, like pears, sweet, spicy, and tobacco. With a drop of water, it opens up, and becomes more intelligible. Tart apples, light smoke, honeysuckle, vanilla, cereal grains, and some savory spices layered on top, like basil or tarragon. The palate is similar, but with dark cocoa, and more barley notes. The nose is better than the palate, for me, but both are excellent. -
