Redbreast 12 Year Cask Strength
Single Pot Still — Ireland
Reviewed July 11, 2016 (edited April 24, 2018)This is quite good, but as is often the case, I am wishing for a bit less sherry influence. It's big. It reminds me of an Edradour bottling I have (single barrel, cask strength, unfiltered, 8 year), but it doesn't have the earthy depth of the peat. That said, I do like this, and I will be taking my time to know it more deeply. It should be noted, the nose is very full and round, with a nice tart spike like dried apricots. It's very pleasant. -
Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye
Canadian — Manitoba, Canada
Reviewed April 11, 2016 (edited September 15, 2016)Decent whiskey. Not quite enough interest in the nose or the palate to have me coming back, but it was worth visiting. This is one of the rare times where I think the Distiller tasting notes are spot on. Unfortunately, this whiskey suffers from a bit from being too uniform, and too easy to understand. It's tasty, but there is no depth to the nose or the palate. To he honest, I can't really recommend this whiskey. It is ok, and you won't go wrong in getting in, but you could get much better for less. I can't even recommend it as a whiskey to keep for your non-whiskey drinking friends. I'd say something like Dickel no. 12 is better for that. -
Delicate and floral. The nose is somewhere between a rum and a tequila. Buttery, salty, honey. Not a terrible drink, but it took ages for my bottle to start opening up. It was fusty, and just not quite pleasant at first. After letting the bottle sit, it's drinkable now. There's enough complexity to keep it interesting, though it does run a bit sweet for my liking. If nothing else, it makes an excellent Rickey, or a sour (with lime).

Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Barrel Proof Tennessee Whiskey
Tennessee Whiskey — Tennessee, USA
Reviewed March 24, 2016This is the way Jack is meant to be. The nose is a bit anemic, but still pleasant. The palate is amazing. Rich, dense, sweet, like butterscotch, very spicy, and woody, but not very tannic. And considering it's filtered, it's surprisingly tame, even at full strength (though I definitely recommend a hearty dose of water). My favorite filtered, barrel strength whiskey. Again, this is what JD should be (but it still can't beat an unfiltered, uncut bourbon). Well worth the cost. In fact, I'm tempted to buy two or three more bottles to keep around.
