Interesting nose. Phenolic, waxy, white pepper, sweet almond, stone fruit, tart cherries, floral, vanilla. Palate is similar, but also has an acidic feeling. Hints of mandarin, and vanilla. The finish is disitinctly grapey. Arrival is phenolic and sweet orange peel, moving into pepper, more phenols, apricot, then mandarin overlayed with vanilla. Finish is slightly bitter, and moderately long lasting. Nice silky mouthfeel. A bit hot for 40%, but plesantly so. Pleasant lingering tingle from the alcohol. Quite nice, and an interesting diversion from my usual forays into bourbon, Scotch, and rum.17.0 USD per Bottle

Bahnbrëcker Slow River Blend Hefeweizen Whiskey
Other Whiskey — Texas, USA
Reviewed December 6, 2022Decent blend that is enhanced by the lemon peel and cloves. Not particularly complex, but quite tasty and easy drinking. The base whiskeys are soft, with light vanilla, mild tannins, and a nice cherry note. Very floral nose. The flavors come through nicely even when cooked (used it in cranberry sauce for Thanksgiving). Not usually a fan of flavored spirits (or liqueurs), but this whiskey is very pleasant, and is perfectly executed. I think they produced exactly the spirit they were shooting for. -
Benchmark Full Proof Bourbon (125 Proof)
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed November 6, 2022 (edited February 24, 2023)Neat is fine, but water opens this whiskey up nicely. A little water brings out big butterscotch, and more brings out cherry and wet oak. Low to moderate finish, but the flavors are excellent if a bit hot and young. Not super complex, but very tasty nonetheless. Nose is much the same as the taste, just a bit more sour and herbacous. -
Smooth Ambler Old Scout Straight Bourbon (NAS)
Bourbon — Indiana (bottled in West Virginia), USA
Reviewed November 3, 2022Easy drinking, and nice viscosity. Not particularly complex or interesting. Edit: Adding a bit of water changes this whisky quite a bit. More oakiness, herbaceous, ripe fruit that fades into mild caramel. Like a red apple dipped in caramel, but subdued. It feels hotter with water, which is strange, but it does liven it up. A little bit of pepper on the nose and in the arrival. Waxy, and mild cinnamon on the nose and entering the midpalate. Ripe, juicy pear in the finish. Finish is decently long, opens with herbal notes, slides into fruit. Overall far better and more interesting with just a few drops of water. 3 stars straight, and just under 4 with water. -
Treaty Oak Ghost Hill Texas Bourbon
Bourbon — Texas, USA
Reviewed September 14, 2022 (edited October 22, 2023)Pleasant whiskey. Falls apart with water, but is drinkable neat. The general impression is creamy corn, and caramel. There is a dark sweet fruity character as well, almost fig like, but trending toward brown sugar. The wood is very apparent, and hasn't yet integrated well. It reminds me of oaking homebrew with woodchips. The tannin can be quite astringent when fresh, and has a very woody flavor. I don't dislike jt, but it is notable. The mouthfeel is full, oily, and quite pleasant. Offsets the astringent tannins nicely. No nosing notes for this one. -
A bit harsh and jaggy, a bit heavy on the heads for a young spirit. There is something to be enjoyed though, and the complexity of its elder brethren is visible here. Plenty of vanilla and toffee, and some sugary pear is evident as the mid-palate flows into the finish. Nice, but not quite a sipper. An interesting diversion in lieu of the older expressions.
