Swift Single Malt Texas Whiskey
American Single Malt — Texas, USA
Reviewed August 5, 2015 (edited April 24, 2018)Edit: I got a new bottle, and I can honestly say that it is far more impressive than the first bottle I had. The tasting notes on Distiller are pretty close to what I get, with a few additions. The nose is a bit more floral now, like honeysuckle. I also get some lemon, black tea, and a nice tanic quality on the palate. It's still a young spirit, so it is a bit hot, vibrant, and effervescent. This is a well made whiskey, and was worth trying again. Leaving my original notes below. (Original notes follow) I really wanted to love this, but it wasn't worth the price tag in the end. I'm willing to believe that the bottle I had just wasn't good, but there was just an off flavor throughout. I want to attribute it to cask selection, as the spirit itself was malty and flavorsome, but that funky undercurrent was there. I'll try this again another time, because I like supporting Texas distillers. Just for comparison, this was $50 in College Station. -
Four Roses Single Barrel Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed July 22, 2015 (edited September 12, 2015)Barrel 41-2M. I'm not super enthusiastic about this. It's very good, but I was wanting some more classic bourbon taste. This barrel is SPICE, and tannins. It tastes more like (a very good) rye, than a bourbon. On the nose, I get loads of oak, and rye spice, some cola notes, there is vanilla, but it's sitting in the background, rounding it out, faint hints of mustard seed, maybe carraway. It's intense, and pleasant. The palate is thick, and aggressive. High in tannin, and spicy rye. With time, and a good dose of water, some of the bourbon sweetness is starting to creep forward, a bit of vanilla, and some sweet cola, but the rye kick is still predominant. This is an excellent whiskey, and maybe I will personally enjoy it more as the bottle aerates and opens up. Right now, I am just dissappointed that I drank the rest of my Garrison Brothers last week, and picked this up instead of another bottle of Garrison's. -
Rittenhouse Rye Bottled in Bond
Rye — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed July 21, 2015 (edited September 26, 2015)No where near my favorite whiskey, but still quite good, and a steal at about $23 a bottle. Absolutely lovely in a rye buck. Sweet, savory, spicy, and just all around enchanting. I have to be in the mood to sip it, but it doesn't dissapoint. Perfect when I want that rye spice, without the sugary sweetness of a bourbon.
