Weller Special Reserve Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed September 10, 2020 (edited September 15, 2020)A whisky with this much press should not have a screw cap. Beer should have a screw cap. Pickles should have a screw cap. Toothpaste should. I read about whisky before I buy it. I study the label and the price. Is it really necessary that I check for a screw top? Does it taste different or can I tell the difference in a glass? Not really. But, honestly, can whisky drinkers really (honestly) tell the difference between Granny Smith apple or pear on the nose? I posit also not really. But it's fun to think we can...and it's fun to pull a cork out of a dram we've been studying before spending precious dollars that we really can't afford. I won't do it again. -
It's fantastic. This is my second Irish whisky. I may have to change denominations. Aromatic corn. Corn flavor is good in whisky. Exotic fruity oily taste follows. Pleasant sweet creamy finish. Still there 15 minutes after the last swallow. If all Irish whisky is like the first 2 I've tried, Kentucky is in trouble.

Mild sweet floral nose. Pleasant but nothing overwhelming. Palate flavor is rich raisin, buttery, jam that follows in to a chardonnay wine thing. Long oily finish. My favorite whisky ever and would give it a 5 except for the unrealistic hope I can find something I like better someday.76.0 USD per Bottle

Doesn't match the hype. I like at least a flicker of corn and this has none. Glad to get to try such a highly rated bottle but, as usual, high expectations aren't met. Nose is benign, weak caramel or vanilla. Palate is buttery. I like butter but it is odd in this context. Surprised at the lack of "oily" comments which I found predominant. Smooth finish with nothing much to say. Add ice and a little water and it's even less.

Gojiberry nose once you get over it being a screwtop. Really lingers. Very benign palate. Not bad but not noticeable. Good recipe for serious inebriation. Some would call it mild. I would elaborate further but still thinking about it being a screw top. Finish is overwhelmed by the fact it is a screw top. Why? Why would anyone in the whisky business order a bunch of screwtop bottles. No serious drinker would say there's a hint of strawberry, leather, or raisin after unscrewing the bottle. It screams "I am trying to do this as cheaply as possible". I understand six Sigma, economies of scale, a rising tide raises all ships, and EBIDTA. If I bother to stop on the way home from work on Friday and spend 40 bucks on some whisky, I want to pull a cork out of it like my great granddad did.
