Virginia Distillery Co. Port Cask Finished Virginia-Highland Whisky
Blended Malt — Multiple Countries
Reviewed November 6, 2022Lightly floral on the nose, sugar syrup. A bit bitter on the tongue. Some lemon zest. Water opens it slightly. Strong pipe tobacco. Some minerality. Noticeable alcohol. Fairly boring. I prefer the cider cask finish in this series. -
Ragged Branch Signature Bourbon
Bourbon — Virginia , USA
Reviewed August 26, 2022 (edited September 16, 2022)Nose: Fruity and floral — cherry and cherry blossom; baking spices, fresh cut fruit wood; currant; ginger; cinnamon candy. Bold and complex. Mouth: syrupy and spicy sweet, drying rye finish. Nice balance of wood and other flavors, some smoke. Water doesn’t change things much, but maybe adds a little depth and clarity. -
Nose: Cinnamon, light spearmint, cereal , slight dust in sunlight, hint of banana peel. Some water intensifies candy flavors with some caramel emerging. Oak is illuminated. Mouth: Much like the nose with greater intensity and complexity. Light bodied and dry. Frooty! Water does not produce a dramatic effect, but strangely makes the alcohol more dominant.

Nose: Heavy corn influence, mild citrus , some mild oakiness, hint of herb (spearmint?), moss, some spice. Slight dustiness emerges with a few drops of water. Mouth: Herbal burn! This is a harsh 90 proof! Lots of alcohol. Long syrupy herbal finish. Reminds me a bit of absinthe for some reason, perhaps mild licorice notes in the herbalness.

Color: Tawny Nose: Orange truffles. Fresh Hay. Slight butter emerging late. Some wine-flavors with water. Mouth: Spice. Slight citrus. Slightly sour. Lingering lemon drop finish. Water opens a little cereal, but H2O is mostly not friendly here. Conclusion: Interesting corn-free, American rye. Forty-percent malted barley. Quite delicious and a worthy sipper!

Color: deep copper Nose: Orange peel — citrus zest. Slightly floral/sweet perfume. Graham cracker breakfast cereal. Mouth: Oily — citrus zest carries through. Slight sourness. Short finish. Water brings a slight vegetal note. Conclusion: Decent, but not terribly complex or interesting. Likely very nice for a julep.

Color: Light golden honey brown. Nose: Lovely fruit . . . Apples, pears. Flowering fruit trees. New-mown grass receding. Vanilla and butterscotch. Light butter. Tangerine. Rich and complex. Oriental/musk cologne. Slight whiff of oak/old boxes. Praline! Water releases some ethanol and reveals some greenery: corn husks and beans. Mouth: Cigar boxes. Mellow burn of alcohol (different from, but evocative of rye spiciness in this wheated bourbon). Dry cereal grain. The taste is much less complex than the wonderful nose. Water eases the burn, but does nothing to aid the rather one-dimensional flavor portfolio. Overall very disappointing. In a cocktail: Tried in a mint julep. Made for some bitter ugliness. Do not recommend. In a whiskey sour . . . so so.
