Camp fire smoke for sure. Maybe towards the end of the fire maybe even a little wet smoke or ash ... Maybe a bit of rubber note( still need more tasting experience of that note)?
This is worth a dram if you enjoy Islay Scotch. A bit young and a bit asky, but it is sweet and spicy too. I only had a sample bottle, but I'm sure I will pick up some more!
If you’ve ever wondered what a bonfire tasted like, here is your answer. Amongst the smoke at times you discern the cedar or hemlock or pine spices, Port Askaig 8yo likewise has its flavours emerge from the smoke that tickle the tastebuds. It’s earthy from nose to finish, like being outside, instead of some whiskies that smell like inside a bakery with all those crafted scents. This is naked and raw and there for you to discover. Delightful.
On the nose, there’s a strong iodine peat, mellowed after a few seconds as some lemon and vanilla notes waft up to join. On the palate, barley sugar with a good peppery boost toward the end. You get a strong sense of Caol Ila as the malt in question based on the palate and nose alone. The green peppercorn finish with the sugary sweet entry makes this a fine dram for the cost. And the peat stays with it to the end with a decent length to the finish.
