Plantation 3 Stars White Rum
Silver Rum — Multiple Countries
Reviewed July 22, 2020 (edited October 9, 2020)Nose (from glass): Hogo and banana, with some alcohol, reminds me of tequila. Not what I'd like to smell. Interestingly, the aroma from the bottle has a more pleasant sugarcane smell. Flavor: A quick sip is sugarcane, hogo, and a slow building peppery finish. A lingering mouth sip tastes like the above-mentioned nose along with a nice oiliness on the tongue and pepperiness that builds and stays. Final: Makes for a good mixer but a poor sipper. Rating is based on neat sipping.17.95 USD per Bottle -
Aroma is lightly sweet with oak, bourbon, vanilla, and molasses. Has the mild burn that comes from higher alcohol content. Flavor is carmely-bourbon but bit heavy in either direction. Interestingly enough I didn't think it tasted good on the rocks. Huh. I think it goes well as a mixer instead of a sipper. Rating is based on neat sipping.45.1 USD per Bottle

Light candied fruit aroma. Strong alcohol burn destroys any enjoyment for this as a sipper! I can't really get a good flavor profile...sweetened rubbing alcohol? Does way better as a mixer with floral sweetness. I'd only use it for mixing but at this price point it's not worth it at all. One can readily get two or three bottles of something far more palatable -- for sipping and/or mixing -- for the cost of this single bottle. Rating is based on neat sipping.155.9 USD per Bottle

Appleton Estate Rare Blend 12 Year Rum
Aged Rum — Jamaica
Reviewed June 11, 2020 (edited October 11, 2023)The aroma has a light sweetness and that definte Jamaican funk but it's not too strong. This is not a sipper...at least for me! Definitely not a good starter rum for beginners. The alcohol burn is just too much and concentrates on the tip of the tongue and sides for any enjoyment. However, it works quite well as a mixer, particularly if you want that Jamaican flavor. The best I can get is dark fruits and oak. Rating is based on neat sipping.42.95 USD per Bottle -
Aroma is sweetness: brown sugar & caramel. Flavors are hard to pin down. Sweet, yes, "spiced rum" is what I think of, like a standard Bacardi. I probably need them side-by-side to see if there was a difference. Okay as a sipper but does much better in a drink. Rating is based on neat sipping.29.95 USD per Bottle

Plantation XO 20th Anniversary Rum
Aged Rum — Barbados
Reviewed April 10, 2020 (edited December 26, 2021)Great aroma of sweet tobacco, vanilla, and caramel from the bottle! Unfortunately, from the glass the alcohol is overpowering (acetone a.k.a. nail polish remover) if you swirl it so I recommend just letting it be still as much as possible. I know this will sound bad but the flavor just doesn't jive with me. The spicy feel of alcohol takes a little bit of the pleasure away. It does have a nice oily smoothness on the tongue. As a shooter its harsh and burning but it does go well as a mixer. Sipping flavors are hard to pinpoint for me so that dulls my enjoyment as well. I think I can taste some oak and the aftertaste is gently sweet with vanilla & caramel. For the price and provenance I was expecting more. Bugger! I think this is better for those who can taste nuances. Rating is based on neat sipping.79.95 USD per Bottle -
Captain Morgan 100 Proof Spiced Rum
Spiced Rum — US Virgin Islands
Reviewed March 25, 2020 (edited February 6, 2021)Alcohol, caramel, & butterscotch aromas (in that order). Meh. A quick taste has light caramel and the spice comes afterwards in sweet, mild pepperiness. A longer taste has the pepper hit stronger with cheap candy-sweet caramel. Definitely best to be used as a mixer!20.95 USD per Bottle -
Bacardí Oakheart Spiced Rum
Spiced Rum — Puerto Rico
Reviewed March 14, 2020 (edited January 16, 2024)I rather like this for being such an inexpensive rum! I get my sweet rum that goes well with a cola or alone. Strong caramel aroma with rootbeer. In the mouth it's smooth with the strong caramel again, a little butterscotch, and some rootbeer but that's mostly in the finish. Keeping it in the mouth the flavor transitions into hints of banana & vanilla. Works well for mixed drinks where sweetness and caramel are wanted. No matter how it's downed the spice is not obtrusive and comes on more at the end. Rating is based on neat sipping.12.95 USD per Bottle
