Ichiro's Malt & Grain
Blended — Multiple CountriesTastedChocolate granola. Like the kind gram gram used to make.
Kurayoshi 12 Year Pure Malt Whisky
Blended Malt — Multiple CountriesTastedOily prune with a bite. I like. Love is much too strong for this.
Yamazaki 12 Year
Single Malt — Honshu, JapanTastedI can see the vanilla, but no fruit. For flora, try grains, specifically wheat. Very unremarkable.
Cragganmore Distillers Edition
Peated Single Malt — Speyside, ScotlandTastedOnce again Cragganmore: bravo! Lucky enough to try this: the distiller’s edition adds maturity to the fruit and darkens the floratic flavors overall. Like the snake in the Garden of Eden, opens my eyes to the darkness I didn’t realize I wanted, nay needed!
Old Forester Rye
Rye — Kentucky, USATastedLeading note/spice: wild blend of cardamom and clove. Undercurrent of corn sweetness. Will become a regular on my shelf.
Yellow Spot 12 Year Single Pot Still
Single Pot Still — IrelandTastedThe old familiar Irish twang coupled with a floral bouquet. Not quite the price darling, but quite cool nonetheless.
Johnnie Walker Blue Label
Peated Blend — ScotlandTastedI don’t know where this got its reputation. One note: harsh.
Highland Park 12 Year
Peated Single Malt — Islands, ScotlandTastedWeird mix of weaker peat smoke and sweeter fruit, as if dried. If you prefer darker flavor go here, otherwise go Oban.
Oban 14 Year
Peated Single Malt — Highlands, ScotlandTastedMildly interesting hybrid of smoke and sweet. Like a campfire of sandalwood. Or perhaps roasted prunes/dates.
Cragganmore 12 Year
Peated Single Malt — Speyside, ScotlandTastedLauded by the late, great Michael Jackson for complexity, this dram does not disappoint. The quintessential light Scotch, a complex blend of herbal, floral, grassy, and fruity. Alcohol burn but no smoke, if you wanted that, go maritime. I’ll enjoy this mellow pastoral ode.
