Yellowstone Select Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed May 24, 2022 (edited November 17, 2023)I found this on sale during a recent business trip for about $28 after taxes and it is a solid bourbon at that price. I have seen this several times and never picked it up but on sale, I took a chance. On the nose, it has classic bourbon notes with spice added to it. The vanilla, rye, and oak were there at the start. In the glass, it was a medium straw color to light amber, and it coated the glass nicely. The taste was like David Nicholson Reserve in that it is a sharper tasting bourbon due to the rye content. The body never got overwhelmed by either the sharpness of the rye nor the woodiness of the oak it was well balanced. The notes of spice and vanilla were there throughout the tasting. With an Old Fashioned, it was very solid with the spice and the 93 proof but the Manhattan is where this stuff shined. Yellowstone handled the sweetest vermouth I had which was Dolin’s and it handled Cocchi Vermouth Di Torino like a champ. For a 93 proofer, this stuff can hold its own with these two drinks. Overall, I like Yellowstone it is a solid high rye bourbon and I got it at a reasonable price. Enjoy.28.0 USD per Bottle -
Wyoming Whiskey Small Batch Bourbon
Bourbon — Wyoming, USA
Reviewed May 24, 2022 (edited May 27, 2024)It has been a while since I last posted a review. That does not mean I had stopped drinking it just meant that I was not writing about it. I am back now, and I took notes on all the different spirits I have tried. I picked up Wyoming whiskey months ago and had some friends and family over to try it to see how they liked it. Overall, it was a hit being smooth enough to sip but strong enough to let you know you are drinking a bourbon. On the nose I caught hints of vanilla, fruit, and oak with a little bit of ethanol which worried me. I lost all my Glencairn glasses during the move and have not replaced them. On a side note, if anyone knows some good ones, I am open to suggestions. In a rocks glass is coats the sides nicely and has a medium amber hue. The taste was a surprise with the fruity notes like washed apricots or prunes with vanilla. The body was an easy mix of fruit and vanilla or caramel with the oak showing up and lasting through the finish. The end was a bit quick with oak and some ethanol, but it was nice. I was worried when I smelled the ethanol at the beginning of it, but it was never the focus of the drink. This makes a very drinkable Old Fashioned and a solid Manhattan just be picky about your vermouth as this gets lost easily. I forgot what I paid for this, but it is worth between $30 and $40 to me but no more. Enjoy. -
I bought this a while back because I liked the bottle and I found it on sale for about $25 so I gave it a try. First off the bottle is cool with a snake coiling around a shotgun shell. The bourbon inside is not bad to above average depending on your tastes. in the glass it is a light tan color with vanilla and cream notes and it looks thin. The body is nice and smooth with more cream coming out with a little bit of oak and something else I can't put my finger on. It has a medium length in how long it lingers but it is pleasant the entire time. The finish is nice with no bitterness. This stuff makes a good Old Fashioned with the flavors holding their own in the drink. In a Manhattan, I had to be careful of the vermouth so it would not wash out the bourbon. Overall, this is a solid to above-average bourbon in a gimmicky bottle I could definitely see getting this for someone as a gift especially if they did not like bold bourbons or whiskeys. I finally found a bottle of this outstanding rye whiskey. The times I have seen it I did not need another rye and when I did look for it I could not find it. I picked this up for $18 on sale and what a wonderful deal it is. In the glass, it is a light amber almost like scotch and it coats the sides nicely. On the nose, I get some ethonal but also baking spices and something else like dark fruit or spiced fruit. The body is bold but not harsh with the baking spice and vanilla/oak coming out. The finish is wonderfully long and only a bit hot. For the price, this is one of the best rye whiskeys on the market. I still like 13th Colony rye but it is twice the price. In Old Fashioneds and Manhattans this is amazing especially in Manhattans with really good vermouth like Cocchi Torino or Byrrh this humble spirit becomes a home run hitter and is head and shoulders above its 80 something proof little cousin. In the near future, I am going to do a rye tasting and this is going to be a part of it. This I will make room in my bar for it. Enjoy.18.0 USD per Bottle

Byrrh Grand Quinquina
Bitter Liqueurs — Thuir, France, France
Reviewed September 26, 2021 (edited November 18, 2024)I have been on a Manhattan and Negroni kick lately and have revisited a few sweet vermouths and also had a new one to put into rotation. Byrrh Grand Bark Quinquina is not exactly vermouth but it is very close. It is a sweet fortified wine that has herbs and spices in it. In the glass, it has a reddish-brown hue almost like cherry syrup and chocolate syrup and has a sweet nose like raisins or dried fruit. The body is very nice with the sweetness and bitterness complementing each other as it starts off sweet but quickly moves to the bitter and lastly back to sweet. The finish is nice and long. Now for the drinks, in a Manhattan, this is amazing when you use any rye or bourbon that is more on the sharp side versus the sweet side. The only real negative I have for this is that with "wheated" bourbon it is almost cloyingly sweet. In a Negroni, it is also very nice but the right gin makes a difference as well. I made a Negroni with Gray Whale gin and this and it was just about terrible. I guess the mint or other herb in the gin did not go well at all with the Byrrh. When I made another one with Boodles gin it was amazing. Lastly, this is very drinkable by itself with a little ice. I am glad I have tried this and I can't recommend this highly enough. 13th Colony Southern Rye Whiskey
Rye — Georgia, USA
Reviewed September 14, 2021 (edited November 13, 2023)This is the 4th 13th colony product I have reviewed and it is my favorite of the bunch. 13th Colony Southern Rye Whiskey is in-your-face bold rye that is great to drink neat and makes an amazing Old Fashioned and Manhattan. In the glass, it has a medium amber hue to it and it coats the sides of the glass nicely. On the nose, I get baking spices like nutmeg and clove and no ethanol. The body is wonderful and long with the spice lingering on my tongue with a little burn to let you know you are drinking something for grown-ups. The finish is long with some woody notes showing up and a long finish. As far as mixed drinks I stated earlier that this makes an amazing Old Fashioned and it does. The Manhattan is where this shines with cheap vermouth it is great and with Cocchi Vermouth di Torino it is a thing of beauty. The full flavor of the rye goes very well with the vermouth. I really like this rye. I picked it up for around $33 but I have seen it for as much as $42. If you are a fan of rye whiskey and like bold flavors, this is an easy yes. Enjoy.33.0 USD per Bottle -
Over the last few weeks, I have been putting together recipes from both of my grandmothers and writing them down for the family. One of my grandmothers has a Peach Cobbler recipe that calls for a fair amount of peach brandy and I picked this up to try it. Before I start the review the cobbler was great. In the glass, it coats the sides nicely and on the nose is light peach and vanilla. The body is nice and mild with more peach flavors and a slight touch of burn but at the end is the chemical taste that I do not like. The finish is a little long for such a low-proof liquid with sweet peach with me till the end. I have not found any drinks to make with this yet but I am looking. The price is nice and the liquid inside is not too bad either. Enjoy.13.0 USD per Bottle

Now that I have finished moving and getting my house set up. I have time to get my bar back together. I was at my new local package store where they had regular Pinnacle Vodka on sale for $8 a bottle so I took a chance and I am so glad I did. In the glass, this stuff nicely coats the sides and is so clear. On the nose, there is little or no smell but at room temperature, there is only an ethonal taste but chilled there is nothing. The body is sweet and very quick to leave with no real flavor. The finish is also sweet with nothing else left behind. Once again let me say this was $8 a bottle and at that price, I will keep this at my bar. In a regular Martini, it is fine, and for whatever reason, it makes a wonderful Gibson with onions the sourness of the onion is offset by the sweetness of the vodka. Lastly, in a Vesper, it works as well as any vodka I have tried so far. Overall, this is an outstanding low-cost vodka, and again at $8 it is an absolute steal. Enjoy.8.0 USD per Bottle

Gray Whale is an excellent example of a modern gin where the juniper is there but other botanicals get to play in the pool. Last week, I picked up a bottle for about $30 and spent a few rainy days trying different drinks with it. On the nose, I really like the soft juniper and citrus notes with a touch of spiciness. The body is smooth for a gin and can be sipped neat or with ice. the spicey notes are present again with the citrus running alongside it. The finish is nice with a minty note like soft buttermints lingering in my mouth. Overall, this is a different gin and that is a good thing. They use mint very well and at no point does it overpower the gin, unlike a few other gins that I have tried. In a Gin and Tonic, you have to be very particular about the tonic water and the ratio. At 3:1 the gin will nearly disappear with only the citrus and aftertaste of juniper being there. For Martinis, I only used .5 ozs of vermouth to 3 ozs of gin. I am still unpacking my bar and don't have all of my different bottles unpacked but once that happens I will try other gin drinks and return to this review. This is a very good gin but a bit overpriced at $30 it is a good deal but more than that is more than I think it's worth, but this is a gin to take a chance on if you want something a little different. Enjoy.30.0 USD per Bottle

Bluecoat American Dry Gin
Modern Gin — Pennsylvannia, USA
Reviewed August 12, 2021 (edited August 1, 2022)I have not written anything in a while due to moving from SC to GA. Now that the move and move-in are complete I can get back to drinking and enjoying Adult beverages. I picked up Bluecoat Gin on a business trip to North Carolina for about $25 buck and I am very glad I did. The nose is very nice with juniper and citrus notes jumping up to meet you. On the nose, it is almost a Modern Gin with juniper only being a bit player but it is still strong enough to be in the entire tasting profile. The body is more juniper and citrus and just a little heat. The finish neat is kind of long for a gin with the citrus and the ethanol burn. I did ding this gin a bit for the burn it is not something I can sip neat or with ice. Now for the important parts how does it taste in drinks? In a Gin and Tonic, it is amazing especially with Fever-Tree Elderflower or Mediterranean tonic water. The flavors are great together. For Martinis, this works with dryer vermouths and better with a lemon peel. At 94 proof it is not too strong as to put you to sleep but strong enough to let you know you are drinking something. Overall, this is a really good gin at around $25 but higher than that I believe there are better options. Enjoy.25.0 USD per Bottle
