Disappointing. Great nose, complex sherry notes. Palate is like aberlour abunadh. Mediocre stuff can complete with macallan classic cut perhaps on its best day but flavors are too muted, orange forward to compete with the rich complexity of top notch sherry bombs like bunna and glendronach. Tried this after using these to benchmark: macallan classic cut, red breast 15, rabbit hole daeringer, glendronach 18, bunnahabhain 18. All of those drams are superior. I have some sample left. Will let it oxidize, turn back to it in a month or two to see if it improves

Wilderness Trail Bottled in Bond Single Barrel Bourbon (Wheated Bourbon)
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed October 18, 2021Benchmarked against woodford wheat; makers 46, cask strength, and Wine Rack cask strength store pick; and larceny. Admittedly, none of these are exceptional drams but they’re all superior to this mediocre wheater, which is fairly simple: a floral off note and very faint wheat note. Hopefully this opens up with oxidation over time. I’m going to let this sample sit there for at least several weeks before turning back to it. -
Balcones Texas Single Malt
American Single Malt — Texas, USA
Reviewed October 15, 2021 (edited October 30, 2021)First impression, benchmarked vs h mckenna 10 yr bib. This is disgusting. Why do all American distilleries always make single malt that tastes like auchentoshan? -
Excellent whisky but i would want to try other expressions that are older and/or finished in something besides bullshit bourbon casks. Still this is exceptional. Similar to but better than lagavulin 12, its richer, perhaps simply due to higher abv. But it’s also way more expensive and laga 12 is top notch in its own right. Want to try an octomore sample set.

Buffalo Trace Kosher Wheat Recipe Straight Bourbon (2020 Release)
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed August 28, 2021 (edited December 12, 2021)Ok. A very young version of weller special reserve w/ possibly a distinctive kosher off note. Would consider buying at $40 but overpriced above that. -
Arran Sherry Cask "The Bodega"
Single Malt — Islands, Scotland
Reviewed August 19, 2021 (edited October 30, 2021)This isn’t bad but it’s inferior in flavor but similar to macallan classic cut. It kind of tastes like that with less sherry influence and a sharp note on the finish. Surprising bc macallan is matured in sherry seasoned con barrels and arran is using real sherry hogsheads for this -
The Glenrothes Whisky Maker's Cut
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed August 19, 2021 (edited April 5, 2022)Had px as reference spirit then tried this for second time. Decent sherry matured single malt, like macallan 12, bunnahabhain 12, glendronach 12, perhaps even less malty than those. But not a stand out in any respect. I would be interested in a cask strength or more aged sherry offering from this distillery. But I haven’t tried anything yet from these guys that particularly good. The bourbon matured stuff is mediocre at best, even at 22 yrs of age
