Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban 12 Year
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed April 30, 2018 (edited September 11, 2018)An approachable golden red hue. The nose is rich and pleasant, but muted, as if you know there is something really good to smell but no matter how hard you sniff you just can't seem to catch it. Rich, sweet, oily texture draws saliva when held on the tongue. As the spirit touches the edges an immediate spicy burn blooms. A long spicy finish surprises what I would have expected to be dark and raisiny sweet from beginning to end. The port finish gives a very unique body and weight to this otherwise relatively young scotch, which I love. There is also more bite here than the standard 10-year. Cinnamon and clove in mulled cider. Yum.53.0 USD per Bottle -
Tomatin 12 Year Bourbon & Sherry Casks
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed April 30, 2018 (edited September 11, 2018)Very pale yellow. Thin legs. A gentle and seductive nose. Honey, cream, and wildflower. A hint of hay and tart apple. Gently sweet on the tongue then nothing. No flash of flavor. Empty. Slurping fumigates with menthol in the nasal cavity, and swallowing provides a mild astringency at the back of the throat, followed by menthol burn on the tongue and roof of mouth. Not terrible and I'll eventually get thru the bottle, but I should have let the low price for a 12-yr single malt deter instead of intrigue me. A small step up from the everyday blends, but not what I'm looking for. Pass.33.0 USD per Bottle -
Henry McKenna 10 Year Bottled in Bond Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed April 29, 2018 (edited January 2, 2022)Yep. So much going on here. Nice rich amber color. Neutral nose hides the amazing ride you are about to go on. Sweet toffee and caramel with lightly toasted nuts gives way to cinnamon, nutmeg and dried fruits... plums and apricots. A dash of menthol and Gentian bitters. Wow. Since the bourbon craze all the competitors at the price are drying up. Enjoy while you can, this one is going to lose the age statement and/or go up in price soon.27.0 USD per Bottle -
Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr. Small Batch Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed April 29, 2018 (edited September 11, 2018)Very light, sweet, and floral. Pale. Fleeting nose. Finishes with a gentle oak burn warming the tongue. Disagree strongly with critic's flavor profile except the red hots/cinnamon. Very well made for a standard small batch, appreciate the BiB, but on the expensive end as a non-boutique. Truly a unique flavor when tasted side by side with other quality bourbons. Elegant like a dancer, but does not have the depth of flavor to compare with longer agings. Would buy again, but not quite a go-to. Can't quite shake a consistent cinnamon burn that doesn't make sense for this proof or mash. Feel a bit like I'm fighting against it instead of relaxing and enjoying.40.0 USD per Bottle -
1792 Small Batch Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed April 29, 2018 (edited September 11, 2018)Rich and thick. Quite viscous with substantial mouthfeel. Sweet on the tongue, blossoms across the roof of the mouth when swallowed, then lingers long with prominent spice. The alcohol and oak morph into iodine for the dramatic finish. Nice toasted flavors, and very bold. Quite good and memorable. Recommended.31.0 USD per Bottle -
Rieger's Kansas City Whiskey
Other Whiskey — Indiana (bottled in Missouri), USA
Reviewed April 7, 2018 (edited November 15, 2018)I actually really like this one, but disagree with the critical review... it think this one is buttery smooth and don't really get the spice. For a limited distribution type of booze, this one is top notch. Would easily put it upagainstagainst the lighter profile big boys (wheat mashes). -
