Light in all aspects. Mildly sweet up front with a very gentle pear-quince flavor and a hint of vanilla and cream. The finish is prominently oak, and not terribly far removed from a light, sweet bourbon. A gentle spice and burn settles onto the tongue and palate after swallowing. Doesn't distinguish itself, so save your sipping for something else more special, but no black marks either.

E&J VSOP Brandy
American Brandy — California, USA
Reviewed December 30, 2016 (edited February 27, 2020)Very sweet. Strong cherry-vanilla flavor, but in appealingly natural (not cough syrupy). Light-bodied and thin. Gentle for a cheap brandy, with only a mild tip-of-tongue burn. Not bad. -
Bottle doesn't claim to be a cognac (including in the Distiller picture), only a brandy, so probably incorrectly classified. Relatively sweet with a balanced body and generally rich, round fruit flavor. Not picking out too many distinct flavors, but some apricot and citrus peel. Not very smooth - strong ethanol with pronounced burn.

Very, very smooth. Prominent sherry overtones - dominates the palate. Honey, some floral notes, fig and subtle raisin. Extremely drinkable for the price. Won't satisfy those looking for complexity, but a pretty easy recommendation for a go-to Irish. Great for the price. Update - side by side with a number of other Irish, noticeably less sweet than others. A bit musty and pungent, but settles out nicely when drinking solo. An affordable choice for those who like nutty sherry notes without as much sweetness.24.0 USD per Bottle

Larceny Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed October 29, 2016 (edited September 11, 2018)Super smooth. Easily recognizable as wheated due to the sweetness, but still has some character and spice to keep it balanced. Recommended. Revisited: toasted peanuts come through strongly. A little flat when compared to others. Vanilla banana bread is on point. Fine enough but not special. Dropped from 4 to 3 stars. Affordable price point.22.0 USD per Bottle -
Neat. Very mild nose without much character. Sweet orange peel followed with a flash of white pepper spice. Would likely lose this with water/ice; very muted even on the second sip. Clings to the roof of the mouth rather than the tongue. Sherry is prominent with notes of honey. Smooth and rich in the mouth. Very good and easy to recommend - a crowd pleaser, but perhaps just a bit uninspiring to assign to the upper echelon.35.0 USD per Bottle

Hochstadter's Slow & Low Rock & Rye (84 Proof)
Rye — (BOTTLED IN) Scobeyville, New Jersey, USA
Reviewed August 8, 2016 (edited February 4, 2019)First taste was amongst other whiskeys... not a fan. Very sweet and cloying with a strongly medicinal, bitter citrus rind taste. Later, after reading the label and approaching with a different frame of mind, it was much more enjoyable as an aperitif. More comparable with liqueurs or Drambuie than unadultered whiskeys. -
Highland Park 12 Year
Single Malt — Islands, Scotland
Reviewed July 8, 2016 (edited September 11, 2018)One of the first peated Scotches I purchased. Approachable smoke with toffee and some light tropical fruit beneath, and balanced. Wasn't blown away but my palate has matured since. Need to revisit.48.0 USD per Bottle
